Thread: Pentax K100D

    Default Pentax K100D

    Hi guys,

Noted that the current price is about 1065w/o GST. That's the cheapest right?
I -might- be getting it soon, since it is within budget, 18-55 should be more than sufficient to meet my needs for the timebeing.

Already found out that it is IR capable. Just a question though, is there any particular super duper reason why I should get K10D over K100D?

And - you know, you always see the pancake-like lens everywhere when Pentax DSLRs are mentioned.. It's 43mm Limited Edition one or? What's the rough price?

Thanks so much for your replies. Much appreciated, by the way, any comments about kit lens with regards to my main area of focus - i.e. landscape.. Would be welcome too.

1065 should be at Cathay. MS not bring it anymore. Atlease that is what they told me. Tomorrow I am going to the fair at 8++ to see how.

Actually if you 'might' be getting it soon, I suggest that you really go and try it out. Play with it and stuff, to see if it is the one for one. I still have not tried the camera out yet honestly. Later when I try it out and don't like it, I hear the KM 5D calling me. Period.

    Will definitely try it out,

But based on paper, and all that, I think it's the one for me, since I'm a very value-for-money kind of guy, don't think I'd be happy with Canon/Nikon at all. =D

And my priority is IR. So it's IR-friendly, all the more power to it.

    Hi

    K100D Strengths:
+ Lighter (Some like it this way!)
+ Cheaper (LESS $$$ for your "fix")
+ AA Batteries (run out of juice? just buy some at the mama-shop and you're good to go!)

    K10D Strength
    - 10MP vs K100 6MP (not an issue for me)
    - Built-in CCD cleaner
    - Improved Shake reduction (according to feng wei's test)
    - Improved image processing and ability to convert raw to jpeg in camera.
    - Water proof seals
    - Support for new range of water-proof HSM * lenses.
    - Higher end specs.

If you are not really into professional photography, the K100D should offer best bang for buck. Recommended if you are upgrading/moving from a D40. D50, 350D, 400D, E300, E500 or P&S. If you are looking for something in the 30D or D80 range, then the K10D is your choice.

I'd really discourage you from considering the discontinued and problematic KM5D...

I have both the K10D & K100D. Both are great cameras, capable of producing great images, the limitation being the photographer. Being the current flagship model, the K10D obviously has upgraded features and enhanced capabilities but it is also a bigger and heavier camera. Higher megapixels also mean more larger file sizes, particularly if you shoot in RAW. The K100D is plenty of camera, the K10D more so. The upgraded specifications of the K10D are great and nice to have but frankly can be overkill if you're not able to capitalise them. Choose what will get the job done for you.

I'm actually using my K100D more than my K10D, perhaps because I've been using it to teach my 8 yr old son how to use a DSLR (and later this week, some of his friends). The K100D's smaller size and picture modes is a definite asset in my book.

    Thanks for the info guys!

Yeah, I'm not aiming to go professional, really. More like a hobbyist sort of thing, so I don't think I want a noticeably larger camera (K10D versus K100D). Besides, a lot of the reviews whack K10D for image softness, i.e. insufficient sharpening if you save in JPG, don't think I'll be committed enough to process everything RAW style. I would have to do that, right? =D

Just got back from the fair

I personally feel that the K100D is better, because it is lighter and the white balance is better.

But I felt that the K10D's AF was much faster than the K100D(Maybe because of battery?)

But both the AF are so noisy! Like my Minolta 7000i.

Anyway the Da* lenses are supposedly working copies!

well, one thing to mention, if you choose K100D, then you can not enjoy the faster and quieter AF, which is a key feature of the two newly designed star lens.

I have little doubt the star lenses will offer superb optical quality and AF speed, but such quality won't come cheap. Which is why the K100D is a great start for digital SLR photography on a budget. Now if only the kit lens went a little longer, say 70mm-80mm, it would be ideal.

Hehe, I don't need speed. Landscape mar.

Will keep reading up though, must make sure I know what I'm buying into, if I commit proper. 300+ more, the difference I'm ok with it. Between K10D and K100D that is.

    Just checking..

When I played with the K100D, I realised thT it was rather hard to see the AF points... Is that normal? And also the K10D's AF much more accurate right?

Well, you need sometime to get used to Pentax's viewfinder and the way the AF points are imposed ... after that you'd see those little red dots easily

And it's is NOT correct that K10D's AF is much more accurate. Both might or might not have focusing problem, it all depends on the combination of the camera (no matter it's K10D or K100D) and the lens mounted on. Most cameras should be alright, it's just some sample variation I guess. Better test it out when you do the purcase.

The simplest way to test it out is shooting at something not to far but not too close (like the shelf in a store) wide open and see if the pic comes out okay. Then close down abit, shoot again and see if it gets better.

For a new camera, better buy it locally, so you can exchange for another one if it has problem. If buying a second hand one, you can always test it out before the purchase.

    Just my 2 cents.

Seeing you've been looking for this cam for quite a while, why not take the local offer (9xx something) and enjoy using it
