I stand to be corrected...

If I am not wrong, CP8700 does not support TTL, only CP8800 does that. So, I guess that means any external flash will work the same way, whether SB800 or 600 or the older flashes.

Thanks for your response. I am still trying to grapple with the term TTL. I know it means "through the lens". Seems like very little actual information is available about possible speedlight for this camera except what's mentioned on the manual. Some thread I read suggest to stick to flash models ending with DX like SB80DX for example.

U are rite, TTL means thru the lens. What actually happens is that when u zoom, the flash head (internal) also zooms accordingly to the focal length of the camera so that the flash exposure will be rite. CP8700 does not support TTL, so getting a SB800/600 that has TTL will be useless. Unless u wanna buy the flash and upgrade camera later. But at this point of time, I would get a cheap nikon flash from B&S and use first.

I use SB-24 or SB-28 in TTL mode. No problems. TTL mode on the flash but not true "TTL" as the light sensor is actually on the pop-up flash of th 8700. i-TTL or d-TTL is not supported, so no point using newer flash.

Are you using SB-24 and SB-28 with CP8700? Somehow I get the impression that SB80DX would be a good choice.

Hi eawtan,

Thank you for your respoonse and the sample shot. Since I would likely be taking quite a bit of picture indoors, of dancing activities and under such lighting condition I would appreciate some info on which one works better. BTW have you any experience with the SB80DX?

So far when I take group pictures indoors with the camera's pop-up flash the pictures are just dissapointing - under exposed.

Hi Dogcom,

1. I have no experience with the SB80DX, never used it before on any cam so I wil not comment (some may say it will work and is identical but I will not confirm without any real hands-on experience) .
2. Depending on the distance of the subject, an external flash may or may not be sufficient (it is certainly better than the built-in flash). I would suggest u increase your iso to 200 or 400 (if you still find the flash insufficient - internal or external). A good foundation on flash photography would probably be the key to understanding most situations.

Thanks. I guess I still need to play with the camera more cos I am still not totally familiar with all the settings.
