SONY VEGAS Editing

Okay....any kind soul got links and "tutorials" how to edit in SV?

I've downloaded my clips from the DV tape and they are in avi clips.

i'm trying to
1) cut out certain unwanted portions.....how to do that? i've briefly looked thru and played with the menu but still don't find a simple way to cut away unwanted frames...any steps?

2) how do i adjust say...colour tones for a range of selected frames?... like i wanna tinge it blue or reduce its saturation and stuff?

3) can i use photoshop for such thigns?

4) anybody knows where i can get that lil clip like in the old days whereby the screen shows the dirty film countdown with "5, 4, 3, 2, 1" ?.....know what i'm talking about?

nice meeting you on last Sat.
I have not use Vegas b4 but i think basically many software abt the same.

I am not talking abt the short cut keys but probably you may want to try this way if it works..

1.) select the clip on the time line tat u wanted to edit.. right click and look for "cut" or other terms with the same meaning.

2.) look for filters under tools and "colour corrections"

3.) photoshop is more for still image editing.. i dont means u totally cant use that.. but is not the appropriate tool.

4.) look under filter as well..

well, as i have said i have not used Vegas b4 so i not sure if u have all this filter to do the job..

btw, have u shifted house? if u have your vegas in your laptop, probably i can explore vegas together with u..

great meeting u the other day!

i haven't moved house yet nor have a lappy..... Most likely to move in June and don't know when to get a MBP...but definitely MBP for me..... I'm using vegas on my desktop PC.......and realised that i'm not really good at such things!

maybe its due to the fact that i've been more sold to mac ....... I can still remember the steps that were highlighted for FCP when i went to the NAB tradeshow in Las Vegas last year.......they were dishing free tutorials and tryouts for FCP for the scenes of King Kong....... those were really inspiring......

Anywayz....well, since i'm on a shoestring budget.....(maybe even lesser) must as well try to wreck the vegas software and see what i can get outta it...

*BTW....still gotta discuss displaying pics with you one of these days.... *

You can trim the ends of a clip by dragging it. If the unwanted section is in the middle, select the clip at roughly the spot you want to remove, and press "s" to split the clip. Then you can drag the new ends to trim out the unwanted part.

Easiest way to affect only certain frames is to split the clip into smaller sections and apply the Color Correction filter to the part you want to change. This filter has controls that adjust colour and also saturation. If you don't want to split the clip, you could also apply the filter to the entire clip and then make the filter effective at the desired point using keyframes. By the way, just about everything iun Vegas is keyframeable, but it takes some practice before it stops being confusing.

Not worth it, it would take forever, because Photoshop works on individual frames. You would have to export a sequence of still images from Vegas, batch process in PS, and then re-import into Vegas. Very tedious.

I shot in 16:9 ... with a consumer old JVC DVcam.... issit normal to have that "noise" in the pics?

Hi plsoong. Not really sure what noise you mean, but usually if you have a lot of noise it's because there's not enough light!

Or maybe, the JVC does not have real 16:9 mode, and is actually cropping the top and bottom, then upsizing the picture to give 720x576. In this case, you could see conversion artifacts, and the picture will also be a bit soft. Is it possible for you to post a still shot of the noisy image?

It probably doesn't matter if it's dvcam or not, but if your camera is really old there will be quite a bit of noise. I've got a really old shoulder mounted 3ccd sony that has some supremely crazy noise.

i got a manual and have read parts of the editing..

usually programs are likethat....when u want to cut straight to the chase, they will explain in parts here and there and u go deeper and deeper into what and how to do it...and then by the time u get back to the actual sequence that u want, end up getting all confused ....

thanx for all the help so far...been playing with vegas more seriously...VERY FUN!

However, i notice that my filter package is empty...is there a place where i can download some filters or whatnot?

actually i want a Vignette mask....... anybody knows where to get it? kinda put over the whole track or certain frames to make it look like shot with a cam with vignette

THe other thing is...how do i put a "layer" over the whole track so that i can put in filters or things? ...

currently i just right click and go to Media FX or Video FX and then play around with those supplied and limited stuff.....is that the right thing to do?

Hi plsoong. A few questions together. OK, here goes..

The filter package folder is empty. This is for you to save combinations (packages) of filters that you might want to reuse in future. Yes there are some effects that you can download, but I think they are not packages. Try going to the VASST site and searching there if you want more stuff.

For vignette, you could apply a cookie cutter with a circle shape, and set the feather to 0.20. Adjust the size until you get the right amount of vignetting at the corners.

You can use the next track above as a layer, and set a particular Compositing Mode, but you can also apply filters to the whole track. Maybe this is what you really want? If so, click on the Track Fx button and you will see how to add filters at track level. If not, let me know a bit more about what you are trying to do and I will see if I can help.

Yes it is correct to right-click to apply an effect, but please be careful, because apply Media Fx and apply Video Fx are different! They look the same, but Video Event Fx applies the filter only to the clip in the timeline, whereas Video Fx applies the filter to the clip in the Media Pool. This second one means that if you use the same clip again in the project, the filter will already be applied. May or may not be what you want.

I'll go back to do some stuff to the short video clips that i've made tomorrow.

I'm trying to create the vignette effect as if it was shot thru a super old camera.... and wanted nicer "scratchy" lines than the inbuilt sony dust/dirt effects.....u noe like those black and white ww2 kinda effects?

Anywayz.....i realised that my this JVC cam resolution is quite jialatz..... wonder whether it will be just as bad when its projected.....
