Hiya,
Was out shooting when I noticed a peculiar problem that keeps coming up in my shots. I was using a 18-70mm (on a SONY Alpha) and with most shots (strange thing is it's not on all shots), there appears to be a cut off on the top left and bottom left of the photos: It's definitely not the neckstrap getting in the way and I'm guessing something's malfunctioning with the lens. Any one can shed any light on this? I would probably bring it down to SONY service centre for a check up but I'd like to hear it from you guys coz I can be quite skeptical if the service centre starts giving me a long list of possibilities.

Are you using any filters? Any lens hoods? What are your focal lenghts for shots with the problem and without? (check the EXIF data)

CP filter on a UV filter on a wide angle lens usually causes serious vignetting. the problem above looks like what a friend of mine experienced on his nikon d70 with kit lens. not consistent with vignetting as its typically on all the four corners. even without filters he had this intermittent problem. eventually the service centre found a problem with the shutter mechanism or mirror (can't remember details).

look like hard vignetting indeed, I got this sometimes when I use the Tian Ya filter holder, if didn't put on properly.
As the viewfinder only cover 95% of the view, so sometime only can spot it after taken the photo. Last edited by zcf; 7th March 2007 at 03:19 PM. |

I was using a UV filter .. ahh, so that could be a reason.
Also when Trigger Happy mentioned about shutter mechanism problem, I think it could be related as I also noticed that the alignment of the shot after I shoot is off as everything seems to shift towards the right. In short, the overall output shifts... and the shutter is louder than normal.. oh boy! Thanks Rashkae! I'll be bringing it down to SONY for a check up.. CCD's ok, DCA - not sure why the pic quality drops when I uploaded the pic...
