    Default Frequent Disconnection / MSN

    Dear All,

    I have recently just purchased a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router (Model: WRT54G) and it works just fine when I connect to the internet via my MacBook using the Airport.

    However, my desktop (running Win XP Pro) is connected to the router by a RJ45 cable, seem to experience very frequent disconnection which in turn causes my MSN Messenger to connect and disconnect repeatedly.

    My queries are;

    a. Is this the routerís fault?
    b. Can anything be done to remedy this?

    I have already done the following;

    1. Plugging the RJ45 cable into different ports behind the router
    2. Resetting the Router (using the button at the back of router)
    3. Rebooting my Desktop
    4. Restarting my Broadband Modem

    PS: What is the latest version of MSN Messenger? Is it Ver 8.1?

    Do advise.

    Thank you.

    WG,

    What is the version of the WRT54G you have there? Maybe you can flash it with third party firmware, definitely better than the stock linksys one.

    Rgds.

    Hi, Wolfgang,

    You could try to see if there's a new firmware for the WRT54g. However, I seem to get this impression different versions of firmware causes different problems

    You should be able to get firmware download from www.linksys.com. Also see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G

    This settings is located in the Connection properties. If you are using wireless, so should be at the wireless connection properties

    Check your connection stability
    a. Do you encounter same problem when using cable RJ45 ?

    b. perform a continuous ping at the DOS, e.g. "ping yahoo.com -t<ENTER>" , do you get timeout error ?

    problem is most probably within your winxp system.
    umm.. how about checking out the settings for your network card? it might have those powersaving functions activated.
    i used to have this loooong checklist somewhere that'll iron out the software part most of the time. if the list dont work, the port is spoilt... bleah.

    When using wireless with my macbook (notebook), it works fine.

    when using my desktop, it is connected to the router via a RJ 45 cable...

    As for a continuous ping... it seems to be getting a continuous reply...
