Thread: Need advice in fill-flash

    Default Need advice in fill-flash

Im using D200 with SB600, like to ask few Newbies questions here... hope someone could help.

I've on several occasions tried to take portrait shots during mid-day, thot using fill-flash can reduce some harsh contrast & shadow on the subject.

Without flash, Camera metering takes charge & no problem in getting the right exposure, but with flash turned ON in TTL mode, the flash syn speed will default to 1/60s ~ 1/250s & this will affect the previously adjusted setting and metering, I often have to perform a +/- flash output to get a bearable result.

How do I acheive a result with a correctly exposed background & sufficiant lighted foreground (Subject) with following setting ** TTL mode for SB600 & Aperature priority mode on D200.

    A thanks in advance...

You can use FP high-speed sync. Go to the menus and activate the FP mode. You will then be able to use shutter speed higher than the sync speed.

For fill-in flash, use TTL BL mode on the flash, not TTL mode.

I always use flash exposure compensation... usually -0.3 to -1.0 EV.

the werid thing is the picture wrongly angled. its nice, but its seriously wrong angle. exposure is too dark. focus area should be higher.

for fill-flash u will need to drop eV -0.7 to -1.3 on common situations.

Thks... I noticed TTL BL is always under exposed than TTL mode, anyway I always have to take serveral shots with difference flash exposure compensation to achieve a bearable pic

If i use aperature priority mode with TTL BL, what is a good f/stop to use ? reason i choose f/16 is i dun want subject to over exposed, anyway proven no good

i somehow think you shouldnt use TTL for your flash shots.. too inconsistent most of the time..
but again, i am not a pro with flash photography either..

perhaps TS could provide us with a picture?

    Try TTL -2.0ev in daytime.

Indoors, I prefer a -0.7ev to -1.0ev to preserve the details without too much highlights.

If I am not wrong, when you are using TTL/BL or TTL, aperture size do not control subject exposure. The TTL will automatically expose the subject correctly. In TTL/BL mode, it will take into account the ambient lighting to balance the fill-in flash with the ambient lighting. Use flash exposure compensation if you are in TTL mode.

If your subject in not in the centre, sometimes you'll need to use FV-lock.

f/16 is a little small and the flash power may not be enough depending on the situation and ISO.

Play around more, you'll get the hang of it.
