Oh, well, it had to happen sometime, I guess.
Was happily taking some pictures of a few boys playing "spider-fighting" when my D30 started going "ker-lock!" every time I pressed the shutter. Sensing something was wrong (Duh!) I checked the LCD preview and sure enough, the top part of the frame was not exposed, and the bottom part was over-exposed. Wonder if the insurance will cover it? As I cycled home I felt strangely happy. Was God trying to tell me to quit photography or upgrade to a 1D? Anybody got a 1D to let go? |

You can send to canon for shutter replacement right? At least until the D60 replacement comes up and in sufficient supply.

Shutters are expensive to replace unfortunately. Make sure it isn't just a seriously deteriorating battery, because as batteries age they can lose their capacity which means that the greater current draw at the time of the shutter having to move could push it past its threshold.
I'm afraid unless you blag it big time, insurance isn't going to cover normal wear and tear. Which is what this is. Unless you dropped it, had it stolen, sat on it... oops I didn't give you any criminal ideas did I? |

I remember last time i asked the question of shutter for D60 and one guy said he had his D30's shutter replaced for about S$200 equivalent in Thailand...

Most of those who reported shutter failures in dpreview paid about US$150-$180 for the repair, so I'm hopeful.

Update:
Replacing the shutter cost me $172.60 (of which $120 was for labour - inclusive of general servicing). Assuming it will last another 30,000 shots, that works out to $0.00575 per shot (about half a cent). |

what.... only 30k shutter cycle life?? that's miserable! i can't believe canon put such a low-end shutter on the D30...
![]() i know that for cheaper canon models, shutter life is a real problem, having replaced a shutter for my eos100 many years ago. TCW quoted me $150 for the job. anyway, the problem is usually with grease sticking onto the shutter curtain. with film bodies, it is possible to degrease it with some slick handywork, cleaning alcohol and prayers. |

My shutter is highly abused. I shoot mainly in continuous mode nowadays.

Time to go back to a film camera. Your shutter is bound to last much longer.. and you will be forced to shoot less (think processing costs)

Shutter failure is a recurring problem on Canon's systems. When
I had the EOS 500 and 50, I had to send both of them to Canon for servicing because of lubricant leak in the shutter. Seems like it's a pretty common problem. However, with the new electromagnetic shutter on the 33, 30, 3, 1v and probably the new 300v, I believe it shouldn't be a problem anymore. ![]() |

30k life cycle for a shutter is a lot of shots for me......
Assuming you take a roll of film a day, you still need 3 years of continuous shooting to hit 30k shots! Well, maybe for digital, it's a lot easiler to hit that target. Hahaha... |
