Default Nikon Prime Lens AF 28mm f2.8

Hi, anyone have this lens (AF 28mm f2.8)? How's the performance?

I think there a lot of interest in the 50mm/85mm f1.4 & f1.8, how about this?
I've the 50mm 1.8 but found it is not wide enough, always have to step back a lot.
How's the picture quality compared to the 50mm f1.8?

    I've enquired, its about $390...affordable...

Affordable yes, wider yes, but it's also 1 or 2 stops slower

I shoot the 85 and 50 f/1.4 because of their usability in low light.

Since you're talking about the 28/2.8 you have other options available at around this focal length. e.g. Nikkor 35/2 or Sigma 30/1.4

It's an affordable lens with good quality. I own this 28/F2.8 and it's sharper then my Tokin 28-70mm F2.6-F2.8. Tokina must step down to F4 and above to have sharp pics. I compare this against 35/F2 and find that the 35mm is way off my budget so I settled for this and 28 to 35 it's not that much diff in terms of focual length. Hope this helps!

That should be the case for primes. Heh. If it is less sharp than a zoom. Why buy the prime at all

My experience was with a older non-D first generation AF28/2.8, the one with a thin focusing ring. I did not like the results at all, when compared to AI and AIS 28/2.8 versions. I found that the performance was closer to that of the E28/2.8, which incidentally has the same optical formula. I owned all these lenses and used then extensively back then, although never had them side-by-side.

My opinion would be to forget the 28/2.8 and get the 35/2. While the 35/2 is expensive, but its optical performance is IMHO way above that of the 28/2.8.
