Thx..... hmm.... could you elaborate more on the the "little too centre" ? would you had liked to have more water? or the beam? or ? please elaborate

btw, my friend mentioned the turtles are underexposed due to the Matrix metering of the D40 "fooled" by the bright background...
    (1) is it underexposed?
    (2) If it is, how do i control the background without having it washed out while having up the exposure for the turtles?

    thx in advance

    More water.

Dun ask me about Nikon's metering. Its probably one of the more bizzare metering systems. =P

You probably metered on the beam.

I mean I would like to see more of the water compositionally. Apply rule of 3rds to make turtles on left.

'cuteness' aside, I think its abit overexpose at the top part where the water is.

thx... how can i improve ?

Yeah.. i should have used circ polariser to cut the water reflection and glare...

maybe can give a few pointers so that the pic won't look very flat?

The smaller version look much better... cos seem sharper...

i used your pic and tried to retrieve as much details as possible... and this cropping is imho a better way to present it. i'm not enforcing my style, just to share some ideas.

    shot in jpg.... me newbie...

ok... thx... when i shot i was just curious why their heads were all tilting/stretching up... hence i compose the shot as if they were trying to look at how much "clearance" they have between them and the beam....

like one friend mentioned... beam could have been cropped or left out in the composition...

Essentially you have shot into the light and the most interesting, detailed and colourful parts of the terrapins are all in the shadows, and the image turns out dull and flat.

It is not that you cannot and do not shoot into the light, but you must meter for what you want to be the focal subject which in this case has to be terrapins, but these are in the shadows.

Compositionally the use of the upper beam to frame the picture is very unsettling as it cuts the picture at an awkward angle and does not really frame the picture. Now you really need to learn to "see" such things - with your aesthetic instincts and not something you cna learn from books.

A better composition is to use the reflections to echo the terrapins in the water. But again, you need the technical skills to control the exposure. The water will be very bright.

I do not think there is anything you can do further in this photograph - I wont call it a picture - and dont try to squeeze it to death to make a picture that is not there, but just take away the lesson that correct exposure, contrast and details ought to be where you want to present to viewers as your subject.

How you achieve this - in or off camera, with photoshop or not - are inconsequential - for whats good is always good no matter how you arrive at it, and bad is always bad even if you break no rules.

Here's my go at simplifying it to just show the form and shadow of the terrapins.
Let me know if u dun like it. i'll remove the image.

i think the techical side needs a little more practise. In terms of metering, exposure and the use of fill in flash.

As what DCA has said, i'm also not enforcing my preferance and style by cropping the original image. Just sharing with you what i feel about this image and how it may have been able to work out.

    hmmm

seems like the overexposed on the top part is too huge and draws a lot of attention.
was thinking, would it be better if by framing the 4 tortoises on the top part, and the bottom part shows the reflection of them in the pond?

u might be able to run away from the overexposed thingie.

    just my 2cents.
