How to check the quality of lens

I wonder how one nomally check the quality of their lens.. for example the sharpness and color?

I have seen many saying their lens produce soft result. But so far i have not seem those photos yet. If someone can share a sample of those defect photos it would help me to indentified such type of pictures in future..

I'm no pro, but for me it is quite simple - edge to edge sharpness, absence of CA and finally, the ability to pick up details. These 3 are quite easy to spot from sample photos.
