i only feel that the details in the highlights and the shadows are not well retained where they are in the main field. |

ok, to optimise the viewing pleasure of a picture, we will want to have more details in our interested portion, which usually means the central portion minus off the margins and corners, and especially around the subject of interest and the components leading the eye to it, e.g. a meandering road leading to a house.
in your 2nd picture, the subject of interest would be the house and the large piece of cloud in the top right, and the area around it are the trees, and the leading components include the shadow. i thought the cloud can be a bit less glaring, and to have more definition or a faint hue of colors or even some grey tones in it. that would require some control from over-exposure. the trees are a little too dark however, and if it is the result of over-leveling, then it should be prevented from so. or alternatively select that area and lighten shadow slightly. the grass in the foreground is also too dark. that is basically what i feel.... based on my personal style. hence you need not really agree with it. maybe you can share your gear, shooting settings, in-camera processing settings and post-camera processing. then we can see why the levels are so narrow, ie. dark too dark, bright too bright, midtones just right but with a narrow range. hahaha.... in my opinion,
the sky from 1, the house and trees from 3, the grass from 4. clouds wise, the highlights are blown and details cannot be retrieved anymore, stick with 1 overall, i will still pick 3 |

It could be just me, but the highlight clipping seems quite minimal. Personally I think #1 is the best, because I like rich, saturated colours and the boosted reds of the grass appeal to me more than the marginally greater level of detail in #3 and #4

hey zoosh, thanks for taking time.
![]() Did a quick HDR. (the RAW data did not blow the highlights, i made sure when taking the pic) The number 1, 3 compared to the HDR ..... cheers. ![]() Hi stoned, thanks for your view too. i guess it's really personal tastes here. Good practise for me too anyway. hah hah ... gotta go dig out on how to do HDR. Last edited by speedblade; 11th February 2007 at 12:00 PM. |
