my guess and humble suggestion:
1. Use larger aperture to allow more light in
2. Choose a brighter background that is being able to differentiate the hair (black) from it
3. Use flash (powerful one, bounce to the ceiling ~ I hope there is one, so that the subject and background can be light up a little)
4. Fast film

Thanks for your advise. Its with flash but i guess maybe with a diffuser on sort of cut off a lot of light and was at a distance. Aperture is F2.8 all the way- 80-200 and 24-70. Lastly, its digital!
