International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated annually on 8 March, is an occasion marked by women’s groups around the world to commemorate the story of ordinary women as makers of history. It is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men and serves as a looking-glass to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development. This year, the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (SCWO) celebrates IWD 2007 under the theme of Revitalise* A Moment in Time, which expresses an equivocal flavour of revitalising forgotten traditions and the tired modern woman as the two meet at a moment in time in a full day carnival at the SCWO Centre on March 10. As part of the celebration, the SCWO is calling for entries from all shutterbugs for the Revitalise* A Moment in Time Photo Contest which aims to tap on the creative impulses of photography enthusiasts to interpret the theme of Women and Traditions. Winners would be awarded cash prizes and mobile phones sponsored by Nokia by the First Lady Mrs. S R Nathan, Mrs. Yu-Foo, Minister of State, Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports or the President of SCWO on the Revitalise* A Moment in Time Carnival on March 10, 2007.
