Those are pits. IR sensors for the snakes to detect heat singature of its prey..

That one i'm not sure if all snakes have... I know most taste the air with tongue to 'smell' thier prey too..

Nice pictures. Just my opinion. The cropping are too tight. Are you using 400mm prime? Having said that I like pic #2 though. Would be perfect if shifted slightly down.

Thanks Mr Jet Lim. Was using the low budget Sigma 70-300mm lens for long range. Comments noted. Felt the same for #2 pic, there was lettuce below.
