Hi ... I would like to know if it is worthy to buy Canon camera overseas (like HongKong, Japan or Jakarta).
I saw the overseas prices are about 10-15% cheaper than Singapore. Will Canon Singapore recognize the international warranty ? |

be wary when you purchase cameras in Hong Kong and Jakarta, their "tactics" are pretty much similar to that of SG, many friends of mine went to HK to purchase camera goods but found out in the end that they've actually got ripped-off or they've purchase a grey set.
Japan so far, doesnt have much of such problems, as its considered norm for their discount shops to display fixed rock-bottom pricings on their machines. |

and try not to be coerced into buying a ton of accessories, if you have in mind a list of accessories you need, do check out prices of them in Singapore and use that as a gauge. last but not least, always check the goods and ensure everything is intact with genuine warranty etc etc. in case anyone needs stuffs from Japan, you could PM me as i'm going for yet another trip there this April-May check out www.kakaku.com/camera/ for a list of prices in regards to cameras and accessories you might have to click around till you get the right page for the items you're interested in, as the page is only in Japanese. Unless you could read Japanese or have a translator at hand. =) |

Thanks for all the information. If I buy a camera overseas, will I need to pay GST when I come back to Singapore ? Also, does anyone knows why the camera price and photography equipment are generally higher in Singapore ?

Distributor of Hong Kong import from Japan for Hong Kong market.
Company from Singapore import from Hong Kong camera shop into Singapore without the knowledge of Distributor of Singapore. This is known as "grey set". Hence warranty is not covered by Singapore Distributor, unless the warranty card states International. Hope this helps. ![]()

They are taking a huge risk, if caught they will be charged with smuggling and evading GST.If case go to court, they can say bye, bye, to their current jobs. Customs will not stop from here, they will raid the homes to see what other camera equipments or accessories and they will trace back all past records thru the years of what you have brought in without paying GST. This is a serious case to those who do MO in quantity, and the proofs are in b&w in your MO threads with all the buyers in CS. Buyers can also be charged. If you go overseas and buy two cameras, one you carry and the other your wife carries through Singapore Customs, that's OK. But if multiples are found in your bag, both are in serious trouble. Please be careful and beware. Singapore Customs knows and its a matter of time.I am not here to frighten those who MO.Just a word to say, Take care ![]()
