Question Body only vs body and kit lense 30D

Hi guys,i'm very interested in getting a Dslr soon and EOS 30D is my choice. But one thing i'd like to know,is the EOS 30D kit lense any good? If not i'd rather get a body and then invest the money saved on a good prime lense.Advice please, thanks!

Most kit lens is to provide a complete packet.. they are not know to give good IQ.. IMO get the cam alone and get your primes

Good Luck and Happy Shopping !!

The kit lens does have its limitations. However, it seems that your are new to DSLR.
My suggestion is to get the kit, use it and find out which ranges are suitable and what you want to shoot, and learn more about DSLRs before making those major lens purchases.

The kit lens is good. Limiting, but good as a starting lens for finding out what focal length you shoot at. Focal length is quite versatile for a walkabout, it's lightweight, compact, and has decent magnification.

If you are a beginner, is good to have the kit lens as a try-out lens before you invest in other lens as you may not know which area of photography you are venturing into. Furthermore when going for more rugged trip overseas, I tend to bring my kit lens compared to my other more expensive lens as a compromise as I love my "L"s too much to let them get hurt.

liek the rest have said, maybe use the kit lens first...but if u have the money, then by all means get the body only and purchase another lens...just do your research first. some lenses are better than others - OEM and third party.

bah, invest the money elsewhere!

you can still get the kit lens. but you'll save money if you buy second hand. then when you sell it again, you'll won't lose much.

this is extremely ironic considering your Ls are meant to take those bashings, but your kit lens isn't. buy already, use la. don't scared la. collection ah?

Sincerely from one who's just gotten a 30D and loving it, let me first congratulate you for having made a wise choice. My sincere advice, forget about the kit, in general you're paying $150 more (from most reliable Camera shops, CP, MSC, etc) - go ahead and get the body, and then look for someone reliable (there are a lot in the CS community) to laylong their kit lens, and get it for around 70 - 85 (some with filter some more).

My 2 cents worth

I must say this is the way to go. Buy the body and hunt for a used 18-55 kit lens. The kit lens itself is decent for its price but there is a chance that you may outgrow it. Meanwhile, just use it to practice your techniques first before you take the plunge to purchase more expensive lenses.

OT a bit, did the RRP for the 30D just drop?

Regards,
JK

... alternatively, you may also rent lens ... plenty renting their lenses here in CS (bet $20 - 40 d/o type) ... after you're more certain, then buy your own ...

2 cents + 2 cents worth,

hahah like L's are spartacus.ret said earlier, L's were built to take a bit of a bash!

i climbed the great wall in snow with mine and it was covered in snow (cos my friend kicked snow off the top of a checkpoint onto me), i slipped over a couple of times with it in my hands, hit it against hard objects etc etc etc and it's still as good as new. surprisingly didn't even scratch - except for the lens hood which is a bit scratched up...but hey, equipment is bought to be used and enjoyed. think of them as battle scars =)

steal ur lens? then that's just bad luck haha u can't stop that from happening...but then why buy an L...might as well get the equiv third party for 1/4 the price!

sorry to hijack the thread...
