Default Distrortion on 17-40mm

Hello all,

Just wanna check with the fellow Canon users here with regards to the above mentioned lens at its widest end. I find the distortion is too much on my 1.3x body.

How do you take care of it?

I use mainly 24-70 when doing event but in certain situation, I have to use this lens due to the cramp of room. That's why when I mount this lens on, I am going to use 17mm-24mm for the wide. I will get the picture but on the other hand, at the edge of the picture I will see ugly distortion especially when I am taking people or group photos ( I see ET... ).

Any advice from the experts?

Wish everyone has a happy weekend!

Regards
CM

I think ther eare some plugins for PS that can take care of distortions such as this...DXO optics and PTlens are a few of them..

I always try not to use the wide-end or even 24mm to do shoot group shots. The distortion can be very obvious if you're not careful.

I normally fix it by using the Pinch filter in Photoshop and later further massaging it by using the Warp tool. The best would be to use DxO optics as raptor84 mentioned but its going to be an expensive one. (IIRC its around 400 bucks)

Hope that helps. Cheers!

distortion is un avoidable if that wide.even if u correct it in the ps or any software ,the final image will still have a bit distortion, if not the image will be just like any true 28mm len image with all the extra corner being crop off.

Looks like you're going to need PTLens.

I wouldn't use it at its widest on a 1.3 crop body. Even on a 1.6 crop, i'm already seeing a tad obvious amount of distortion.

Since you're the photographer, you should be able to reposition or "pack" your subjects tighter together so that you don't need to go that wide on a 1.3x crop.. probably the 28mm mark on a 17-40 should be alright.

Its the same mistake i made last time when i shot group photos. Luckily, i still had room to crop and alter the photos.

for me, when i'm shooting packed/crowded events, i just take the shot at 17mm, no questions asked.

I don't bother with the distortion, as long I get what I want within the frame.

I found that the 17mm side distortion only happen on far subject.

I have tried 17mm at between 1.5 - 2M away from my subject without any distortion but around 2.5 onward the distortion start to appear.

may i ask how the 16-35 handles the distortion compared to the 17-40?

Strangely enough, theory seems to suggest that generally, distortion is more noticable on wide angle lenses at close distances than at long distances.

Ya, I think the closer the focusing distant, the distortion would be more severe and makes it like an fisheye alike?

But strangely I tried is the other way round.

when I shot near to the person on the 17mm wide side the person on both side of the image look normal.
but once I step back their face will look like hamburger liao.
