Default need help urgently (compact models)

Hi guys i know nuts about cameras. did some research and zoomed down on canon.
some questions, hope u guys can help recommend which models and places to get them (preferably got online pricelist etc...)
cos i need it this weekend, budget is around $500-600+ range.

1. what are the differences between the Powershot and IXUS series?
(isit only like what they say on canon website? ixus looks better and powershot has better functions??)

2. powershot series has a few diff range, like 400, 500, 600 and 700 etc (whats the diff? functions?)

3. i realised some modes has the 'IS' letters, does that means 'image stabilisation' function? isit really that important?

4. regarding pricing..i saw some sites like alanphoto and mscolor..can i get a better deal there? or maybe harvey norman?

5. finally..not to flame but i checked out nikon coolpix series as well and i found that they are almost 100 bucks cheaper...tough choice..any advice?

Thanks in Advance!

1) power shots are better range of camera in terms of features and performance... ixus are just pretty in design imho.

2) most probably just a higher/lower end arrangement.

3)IS = Image stabilization, imho not a MUST, but a very good to have feature.

4) harvey norman price are usually higher than those places you mention, but sometimes they give more warranty/freebies

5) depends on you...

1) yeah, the ixus tend to be smaller (slightly only though); i'd take my a540 over any ixus anyday, hee hee. powershot pride

2) yes, the lower numbers have lower mgp, less zoom, less features, less control too, usually

3) IS only required if your camera has a slightly longer zoom, but otherwise.. like the dude says.. =/

4) use the usual places, usually if you work a little harder you can save a lot, so why not; if you don't mind, second-hand gives loads of savings, sometimes people get rid of cameras which they bought with warranty period still quite good

5) for p&s i prefer canon, when i first bought my a540 a while back, i was comparing the sample photos, i found that nikon's p&s colours tend to be on the cool side. ALSO, most of the cheaper nikon p&s have ZERO manual control. maybe it's just me, but in any case, if you're just using auto mode, colours can be tweaked with image editing progs

to decide which camera to buy, check out imaging resource and dp review, they are decent review sites that are more or less usually neutral and objective.

took a quick peek at a700 versus a710is for you because i'm free, difference seems to be 6 versus 7 mgp, which isn't an issue, really.. since 6 is more than sufficient. but take note that a700 is relatively old (which doesn't necessarily mean bad, btw). also, from what i see mentioned in the website, 700 takes shots pretty slow compared to 710 (no such complaint there).. for that, and IS, i'd pay the $80, really

1g sd card now very cheap already, any reputable brand like sandisk or toshiba or what would do you fine, really.

for rechargeable batt chargers, it depends on
1) charging speed
2) capacity
3) portability
there are many many many different types of chargers on the market, advice is to get a good one so that you won't have to upgrade slowly.. might as well all-in first =D
