for street photog,, maybe theres such a thing as luck.. ie that kissing photograph from paris..

but even if you take someone like cartier-besson.. a lot of his photogs werent from luck.. much has to do with skill and vision behind the lens.

even with landscape work.. sure there is variability with the weather, but even then, people like ansel adams didnt leave it to luck.. they made sure they knew the weather intimately, and if it meant camping out day after day to catch a shot, so be it.

for portraiture.. theres practically zero room for luck.

Luck is a must.. no luck u see the thing u raise ur camera and piak battery flat

oppounity is the open gap where u can stick ur lens thru and take a shot
Erm... no skills needed? Just machine gun ur way thru?

    100% luck
    Hmmm.......

Oh, BTW, do you know which camera Ansel Adams used?

I wonder how many here know how to operate that camera?

    Do you?

For me is awareness. Skill, knowledge and techneically stuff just prepare you for the moment. But only you have awareness then where moment to click come.

nope i do not know the camera, does it matter?
but i know he shoots large format, and yes i have used one before
but that was a long time ago

just want to illustrate that everyone needs luck
even Ansel Adams and he said so himself

i dare not say i know who god had in mind, do you?

    Yes, it matters.

If one is presented with the right moment, but cannot recognise it, and knows not how to operate the equipment, knows not how to frame the scene, knows not how to expose correctly, the moment is wasted.

I use a large format too. Including a 8x10 format camera which Ansel Adams used. After using such cameras for more than three years, I still need A LOT more time than John Sexton or Bruce Barnbaum to take an image, assuming first that I can see what was presented before me!

Yes, and Ansel Adams said it with great humility. There were few people in that era who knew the craft of photography as well as him.

It will be a mistake to assume that Ansel Adams meant that luck was all that is.

    Luck is required. Yes!

But 100%? Are you not exaggerating a little too much?

I may be guilty of blasphemy! But I think I do.

God has in mind those who laboured hard for that right moment to click the shutter.

reminds me of the song again...

    For a good photograph?

Good basic technical skills and decent camera gear are important, but what REALLY counts are inspiration and a little luck.

    My 2 cents....
