My views. I would go for the 50mm, due to lower distortion of perspective.. and of course, you won't have to get 'too close' to a model for portraiture, compared to the 35mm.

Street candid ? I think general focal length from 28mm to 70mm is good. Yes, a 50mm is a good lens to start off

each lens got it's uses for portrait. (even 10.5mm FE also can shoot portrait)
so depends on yourself with the way of shooting.

I think 50mm is a good general focal length. While both focal length are suitable for street candid and portraits, you may find 50mm produce a more pleasing perspective for portraits.

dont be limited by these 2 choices only. take your kit lens (be it 18-70 or 18-55 or even 18-135) and shoot some pictures. go home and take a look at your exif, and see which focal length you love most.

personally, my EF-S 10-22 stays on my camera most of the time when i'm walking on the streets =)

28-70 or 17-50 range for me... imho f2.8 is enough for most usage.

eh? you have 18-135 with you,
that's more than enough to do street candids already.
Wide angle will give u a benefit of not pointing at the person while still b able to capture object into the picture.
Also, slight distortion at wide open will give more fun to street candids.

Think you only need a 50 for portrait, or maybe something longer like 85mm.
