Thread: What do you think of this D80 combo?

Default What do you think of this D80 combo?

    Hi,

Am buying into Nikon since my dad has some old Nikkor prime lenses at home. What do you think of this combination:

    1) D80 Kit (w 18-135mm F3.5=5.6)
    2) SB800 Flash
    3) 50mmf1.8 prime lens (for indoor/low-light)
    Total around $2744

Or should I bit the bullet, take the discount on the kit lens and go for
    1) D80 Body only
    2) SB800 Flash
    3) 50mmf1.8 prime lens (for indoor/low-light)
    4) 18-200mm DX VR
    Total around $3794

Of course, the other critical question is where to get the best deal for this combo!

This is a question of can u afford to buy pakage 2? What do you shoot normally? If say u shooting events in which flash photography is allowed and the 18-135mm range is enough, you may not need the 18-200vr. The 18-200vr is a gd travel lens though, and for non professional usage, it will be considered good enough.(though some full time photographers use it for its flexibility).

That's the key reason I am considering the 18-200VR - I travel frequently and see myself roaming Asian cities at night taking street scenes. Hence the choice of a super zoom + low light.
Obviously I would not want to pay for 'too much camera', hence I rejected all the far more expensive 3-lens options.

If ur taking night street scenes, i have to say get a good lightweight tripod or monopod with the kit lens(maybe a flash if u taking people with u). they are far better than VR, unless u have super steady hands which dun give much blur in low light, VR can't help much.

The Tamron 18-200mm at least 650. Where you find it at 500 for Pentax mount?

I did this deliberately, as two very different viewpoints and user groups read these sub forums. You may be one of the very few experienced guys who read this one!

The option 2 street price for all should be around $300 lower. then your total budget.

That's interesting news - I thought the popular shops were pretty consistent in price. Where would you recommend that I look? I have gone to AP, MS and TK

Conservetively, from the Compiled Nikon List at the Nikon forum, my additions gets to $3570. Which is still 200 dollars less.

Haha different strokes for different folks.

    Great for flights - laptop + cable lock + inflight adaptor + office papers + DSLR + Nintendo DS + 1-2 good books + passport/air tickets/wallet/phone.....

Empty the laptop + cable lock and I'll roam all around town to take photos.

You do realise it's damn huge right? I would seriously recommend that you bring other types of bag for carryon, because the Computrekker really not useful as one from personal experience.

    I recommend a Delsey bag for carry-on.

The Computrekker's good enough for right now - at the price of the smallest Delsey...have my eye on the Kata bag named in another thread. When you see me list the Computrekker on Buy/Sell, you'll know!
