I am thinking of buying my wife a D40 and I am wondering if my Tamron 18-200mm can be used by the d40? I heard that D40 cannot use plenty of lenses - wonder if it is true. Hope to get your advice on this soon.

Can be used but only if she don't mind using it as a Manual Focusing lens.

I may be wrong, but thought that all AFS or similarly equiped lenses can work on D40?

The D40 does not have AF motor in the camera body and as a result requires AFS / HSM equivalent type of lenses to enable AF.
As the above posts have mentioned, there are not many lenses outside of Nikon / Sigma that have focussing motors built in the lenses. Choices are thus limited for AF lenses for the D40. |
