Hi all,
I encountered a problem(or maybe not, don't know if I'm missing settings ) with D200 auto iso function(custom setting b1) when used with either the built-in or external (SB800) flash. Without using flash, auto iso works perfectly fine!With ref to D200 manual pg 152-153, 180, it mentioned, when auto iso is set to 'ON', "ISO sensitivity will automatically be adjusted as required for optimal flash output." NOTE: my ISO setting is set to 100(in manual, it says MUST be <1600). With ref to manual pg 178 table, it mentioned, using with SB800, auto ISO feature is available, BUT I just can't get it working once any flash is used(built-in or external). Any1 encountered the same problem? Did I missed out some setting that I shd? Pls help! TIA!!! |

I tried on my D80/SB800 and found to have the same behaviour. I suspect, when the flash light is switched on, the camera assumes that the flash light is sufficient to fire sufficient exposure with the default ISO(assuming ISO200 like yours), so it will no up the ISO automatically as compared to when the flash is off.
Not sure my assumption is correct, and if anyone could advise, under what circumstances the auto ISO will work with a flash on. |

1. CSM > b1 ISO Auto --> ON, (what's your max ISO setting?) & (what's your shutter speed?) 2. CSM > e2 Flash shutter speed --> (what's your setting?) 3. Operation mode : (what is your selection : P or S or A?) |

Read manual page 153 :
.... (the indicators do not blink if a flash is used). I just tested mine. Settings : ISO 100 min shutter speed 1/30 Max ISO 800 when testing, I aimed it at the base of my table lamp. Without the flash, AUTO ISO was flashing and it was at ISO 640 to enable my minimum shutter speed of 1/30 @f4 and with the onboard flash, the AUTO ISO did not flash at all, and stuck at ISO 100 and a setting of 1/30 @f4. This is so, due to sufficient power from the flash, if there's not enough power from the flash, I believe the camera will then increase the ISO accordingly. But I have not tried tat out yet. move further away (more than what the flash range indicated on the flash) and see if the ISO changes.

Though I couldnt find any article abut auto ISO with flash, I strongly believe that auto ISO does not work in flash mode, at least on D80. You may want to verify this, the auto ISO blinks on the LCD in normal mode but when the flash is switched on, it stops blinking. This probably indicate that the auto ISO is off, and the camera resorts to the default lowest ISO.

with reference to this >>>>>Exposure display show +<......|||||||>- (under)
the exposure will only be measured/determined when the camera fire a pre-flash, so it is not unusual to see under exposed bar as above in a low light condition. Auto ISO is partly used to adjust ISO value automatically to suit the preset condition(min shutter etc) condition, this allow a shot to be taken without a flash, so I still believe that auto ISO will not work in flash mode. I believe the D200 sync up to 1/250 with flash, so the auto ISO might be disabled for just another reason. Last edited by CT 3833; 21st January 2007 at 04:48 PM. |

saw this on the web...http://www.bythom.com/d200guideerrata.htm
it says.... .... In the section on Auto ISO I mention that this function is ignored when flash is active. Actually, it isn't, though the way the camera performs is confusing. Auto ISO still activates with flash, but only if you have hit the range limit for the flash. In other words, if the camera thinks that the flash can give enough light for the subject, the ISO isn't boosted. But if the camera thinks that the flash doesn't have enough power to light the subject, ISO will be boosted if Auto ISO is On. This is easier to see and anticipate with an external flash on the camera that has a Distance Range indicator, as does the SB-800. Once your subject is beyond the maximum distance indicated by the SB-800, Auto ISO kicks in. With the internal flash, you'll need to memorize the table on page 505 in order to be able to anticipate the Auto ISO changes with flash active (yuck). |
