Default how to set camera to deliberately under/over expose?

hi guys

I have a D50

I'm slightly confused about the +/- setting on exposure compensation.

If I deliberately want to underexpose pictures, should I set the dial towards the + or the - side?

And is the general opinion that the D50 underexposes slightly (at default settings)?

thank you

I am not a nikon user but hope can provide correct answers.

To underexpose, dial to -.

To overexposed, dial to +

note: work in auto modes only (P, A, S)

That is correct, the D50, like all Nikon camera's slightly underexposes, which i believe is a good thing, you can save shadows but you cant save highlights.
