actually internet has been around long long time before the 1200 era.

With 1200, I was already logging on to chat with overseas people, telnet-ing to download the latest shareware.

Before the window based interface, there's already www. Just that in the DOS environment, u cannot see the picture together with the text. But for those on the Unix will be able to see both text and pictures.

Another old birdie joining in the reminiscing...

Yes, SIA BBS was the most popular then, and I must admit that I spent a lot of time teleconferencing online and playing Trivial Pursuit at the same time. When it was shut down, there was MicroVillage BBS that took over for awhile. I recall when all 16 lines were busy, my QModem's macro was set to redial every 15 secs until I could get in.

Wonder what happened to Poon the SysOp.

heheh it better be free..it cost me as much as $400 per month of usage! heheh..I would not call it a flop...it actually went on to being a window base version but by then I gave it up as we could sign up for other access. I remember signing up with MSN back then where they have their own dial in number and they charge you by your credit card. That was even more expensive but it was the first time you get to be outside the censorship realm of singapore as this dial up was to microsoft office in Singapore and it was link out to the rest of the world ( which basically was in the US) That did not last long too..that service was terminated I think about year later...by that time I was using 19200kps USRobotic heh.

The only thing I hate about Teleview was it closed by 12am or 1am heh...but then usually those with account in SIA BBS will then just carry on by logging on there if they can heheh..

I was with the then Telecoms when it first launch datacoms service.
The 1st modem i use was a Sematrans 300 Baud modem. Quite big & heavy.
At 2400Bps & above got to equalize the telephone lines aready.
Now you don't hear of line conditioning and repeaters anymore.
Was only accessing very very limited local private BBS then.
    How time flies....

    Now I recall a little:

    ftp to download files.

Telnet to go to some site to irc.

Singnet started off with a dos internet interface. Think it was in 1994. Was among the first few to be in Comcenter to apply for my internet account. About a year later then they switch to windows base.

Looks like not many oldies in datacomm world here...

Anyone heard of or know who were Dos Boss, Don Martin? Or anyone remember or login to Apple BBS?

I also remember the confusion between Baud rate and bit rate... while studying data comm systems.

I used Teleview! Admittedly I was still a kid then, so wasn't chatting, just playin'.

BBS was a great way to spread the "love" around, if you know what I mean.

Favourite BBS - Bilboard, SIA, P.E.A.C.E, Le Express

As for ansi graphics, I saw more complicated one in 80x25 1 page like ninja turtle created with ascii blocks ▄ █ ▌
Software used: Commo. Favourite BBS: Andromeda, SPECial, Sentinel, VCBBS.
Prefers BBS running PC-Board. Don't quite like RemoteAccess.

yah, played bulletin boards before internet.
few years before the Tian An Men incident.
    that was long ago.

that time 2400 was considered very fast.

    Windows os was a novelty.

You have this person called SYSOP who ran the bulletin boards.

    almost zero graphics.
    mostly text.

Wow reading this thread, suddenly the sound of PC XT's booting before the A:> appear, ringing in my head. And also the dial tone of the old modem

I used to frequent places like Tron and Spacecamp. Back then echomailing was already causing such a sensation by letting us communicate with people overseas.

I used to be on BBSes for hours everyday, and still remember the up/download ratio and al the ways I employed to beat it. And then we used to spend hours on doorgames too, like trade wars and some arena fighting game. They were really imaginative back then.. games were so addictive even with just basic ANSI graphics.

Does anyone remember the turn-based game VGA planets for BBSes?

    no jpg files then.
mostly gif and tif files. Super big and takes long time to download. And has to view with a special picture file viewer.....

yeah.. to decode a 30k gif file it took almost half a minute.

And back then the sysops frowned upon wav recordings of music as they were so huge. Now mp3s are everywhere.

Yes! After 2 hours of downloading, your file is 98% complete, and someone picks up the phone... and you're using non-resumable xmodem...
