I remember having my own BBS, and had 2 phone line connected to it. Installed Linux using a stack of 5.25" disk. Later join MSN (about 2 years later) got my first email ID victor@msn.com But gave up when they started charging. Still remember managing the MSN "forum" as moderator.

Haha, yeah now i remember, its kind of crazy.. you picked up the phone hear the tone and you place the phone on the transceiver/modem.

Modemmers gathering used to be at Funan 6th floor.

Didn't like teleview. Yup.. Zmodem is the best.. it can remember if your file download is interrupted and continue where you left of.

Those days... calls were not charge base on per minute! And may get scolded for hogging the line!

Moved on to irc in 1993/4. Started using browser in 94/95. Lastly move on to broadband in yr 2000 I think.

I was using a Apple compatible which could run on 2 OS. CP/M and Apple. I think it has z80 and 6502 on it. I think the PC was Lingo... the company closed down after a while. Later on switched to IBM compatible. I was amazed by the 1st version of Microsoft Windows. Using keyboard shortcuts for wordperfect or wordstar was really painful... Didn't really seriously learn or remember those wordperfect/wordstar shortcuts and waited quite sometime and then it comes microsoft word - using mouse cut n paste and move it around.

I started almost the same as you. What memories. Doing all these at the C prompt. But it sure makes us learn a lot and much wiser I guess.

All the old birds coming out of the woodwork...

I started with 300 bps modem. The modem hot enough to fry an egg on top. Earliest IBM CPU was an 8088 I believe. Before that was the trusty Atari 800, then the Atari ST.

Modem speeds kept getting better - 1200, 2400, 14.4kbps. The obsolete modems piled up in the corner. Yeah, visited BBS every now and then, but never really got into the scene. Fidonet was big then.

Got a mainframe account during my university days. Those days we snuck onto BITNET (pre-internet) and sent msgs and smsgs by typing addresses manually. Then came internet relay chat (IRC), then ANGKH of the NUS sysadmin then wrote P41 (which later became ZP41), a local chat board which became wildly popular in my day. Even had mapping functions where you could identify which user was sitting at which terminal. I was Nightwatcher.

I remember downloading freeware for my Atari using uuencode/uudecode from the usenet.binaries groups. Don't ask me to do that now.

And a sampling of jokes from that era:

"Cathy! what do you want to be when you grow up?"
"I want to be a nurse, sister."
    "Good, good. And you, Maggie?"
"I want to be a teacher, sister."
    "Right on. How'bout you, Mary?"
"I want to be a nun, sister."
    "Very good. Marie?"
"I want to be a prostitute, sister."
    "A WHAT?"
    "A prostitute."
"Good heavens! I thought you said - a protestant!!"

    The Joy of Teaching

    The Lesson
    ----------

Then Jesus took his disciples up to the mountain and gathering
them around him, taught them saying:

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of
    heaven...
    Blessed are the meek...
    Blessed are the merciful...
Blessed are they that thirst for justice...
    Blessed are you when persecuted...
Blessed are you when you suffer...
Be glad and rejoice for your reward is great in heaven.

Then Simon Peter said, "Are we supposed to know this?"
And Andrew said, "Do we have to write this down?"
And James said, "Do we have to show our work?"
And Phillip said, "May I go to the bathroom?"
And Bartholemew said, "Do we have to turn this in?"
And John said, "The other disciples didn't have to learn this."
And Matthew said, "I don't have any paper."
And Thomas said, "Will we have a test on this?"
And Judas said, "What does this have to do with real life?"
Then one of the Pharisees who was present asked to see Jesus'
lesson plan and inquired of Jesus, "Where is your anticipatory
set and your objectives in the cognitive domain?"

    And Jesus wept...

    Dear Mother and Dad:

It has now been three months since I left for college. I have
been remiss in writing and am very sorry for my thoughtlessness
in not having written before. I will bring you up to date now,
but before you read on, please sit down. You are not to read any
further unless you are sitting down... Okay???

Well, then, I am getting along pretty well now. The skull
fracture and the concussion I got when I jumped out of the window
of my dormitory when it caught fire shortly after my arrival, are
pretty well healed now. I only spent two weeks in the hospital
and now I can see almost normally and only get three headaches a
    day.

Fortunately the fire in the dormitory and my jump were witnessed
by an attendant at the gas station near the dorm and he was the
one who called the Fire Department and the ambulance. He also
visited me at the hospital, and since I had nowhere to live
because of the burnt-out dorm, he was kind enough to invite me to
share his apartment with him. It's really a basement room, but it
is kind of cute. He is a very fine boy and we have fallen deeply
in love and are planning to get married. We haven't set the exact
date yet, but it will be before my pregnancy begins to show.

Yes, Mother and Dad, I am pregnant. I know how much you are
looking forward to being grandparents and I know you will welcome
the baby and give it the same love and devotion and tender care
you gave me when I was a child. The reason for the delay in our
marriage is that my boyfriend has some minor infection which
prevents us from passing our premarital blood tests and I
carelessly caught it from him. This will soon clear up with the
penicillin injections I am now taking daily.

I know you will welcome him into our family with open arms. He is
kind and although not well educated, he is ambtious. Although he
is of a different race and religion than ours, I know you
expressed tolerence will not permit you to be bothered by the
fact that his skin color is somewhat darker than ours. I am sure
you will love him as I do. His family background is good, too for
I am told that his father is an important gunbearer in the
village in Africa from which he comes.

Now that I have brought you up to date, I want to tell you that
there was no dormitory fire, I did not have a concussion or skull
fracture, I was not in the hospital, I am not pregnant, I am not
engaged, I do not have syphillis and there is no schwartze in my
life..... However, I am getting a "D" in History and an "F" in
Science.... and I wanted you to see these marks in the proper
    perspective

    Your loving daughter,

Oh man.. it's all coming back....

Those were the days when you had to dial into the BBSes using dial-up software using 1200 baud modem (Smartlink 1200, 2400 etc) . I remember doing ATZ, ATH0, ATDT1234567 in order to go into these BBSes. V34/VFC/V32B/V32/V22B /V42Bis.....modem standards....

    Afterdark BBS,
    Innovision BBS,
    SIA BBS,
    ByteExchange BBS,
    Excalibur BBS,
    Hwa Chong OOSH!,
    Neat BBS,
    Interact BBS,
    P.E.A.C.E BBS,
More still available at : http://pachome1.pacific.net.sg/~zephyh/news.htm

The main menu in ASCII, your login id and password, Door games, Star Trader door games, upload/download using Xmodem, Ymodem and Zmodem (my favourite as it is most advanced!).

Also remember the time with I had a download to 88% and someone called into my house, or my dad/mum pick the handset on the share telephone line and I almost cried because connection dropped. Remeber the time I had to maintain Download/Upload ratios to download games, pictures, text files etc from the BBSes.

Remember the time we call the operators/owners Sysops... ANSI coded graphics, escape sequences for colours and mouse movements, 80x25 screens, text chats with sysops (if they are around).

In fact, those were the times when you have a "cool" email address using fidonet, UUCP for mail routing... ahh... those were the "long address" times.

Those times, screen was written slowly over the wire - where I could see the character being printed left to right, top to below. 1200 was slow, 2400 was fast, 9600 was good, 14.4 was better, 28.8 was cool, 56Kbps was the time when slowly, we move on the PPP dialup, netscape 1.0, ie 3.0 and then slowly to i.e 4 etc etc....

Soon, it is ADSL broadband, and I even forgot those software for dialup... It must have been too long ago...

1200bps! The good old days of BBS & modemming.
And the call waiting on our phonelines will disconnect if we forgot to disable it!

ATDT, ATA, ATH, etc...all the good old modem strings....and the doorgames like Modern Warfare, LORD, Tradewars, etc...

    Anyone from Andromeda BBS? :P
