iMacs are all-in-one PCs, so can't install extra fan. not a very ideal plan, but i have just put a laptop cooler pad at the back of the iMac to circulate the air

Nowadays with fluid bearings, hard disks are quite quiet, except for those high-rpm ones.
If noise from hard disk bothers you, get Fujitsu hard disk, very quiet.

I used to have only 40 gig, so quiet, and the fan's speed is adjustable to control the noise. Then, I changed my hard-disk from 40 gig to 200 gig. First few days was ok, then after that, the hard-disk noise is CONSTANTLY there (once I switch on the PC).

Hmm ... fujitsu hdd i'll avoid due to short lifespans especially if you're a heavy user.

I'd still recommend: (In preferential order)

    (3.5 factor)

    Hitachi
    Western Digital
    Seagate

    (2.5 factor)
    Hitachi

The rest - i'll simply avoid.

My current HD is WD-2000JB 200 GB 7200 8 MB CACHE. Cheap as it cost me only $120- $129.

Reliability: No issue. But,it's so noisy its giving me headache. Very keen to get other thing else asap.

ask u all, it is better to get 2 smaller harddisk as redundancy and backup.... ? for example C drive and D drive , and an exact copy is backed up to another daily.

I think backup daily is too painful to do.
If you have 2 harddisks, my suggestion to do RAID-1 (Mirroring)

... got a Dell 2950 running ... yes its using SAS .... fast.. but too expensive for the mainstream user.
