guess there is no "best" when it comes to harddisk...
but so far my most reliable brand is Maxtor(under seagate now)... it came with my bloody old pentium4(roughly 7yrs ago) and still running fine as a secondary drive since last yr. but old technology is still old technology... it is much slower than my newer purchase 250gb hdd.

Less problematic and return still belongs to Maxtor.

But as explorerZ had said, maxtor its now under seagate.. wtf.... so not quite sure abt it anymore.

From the hourse's mouth (HDD distributors). Hitachi, fewer returns

Personally, if you can afford it, i would suggest you getting a raid system. No matter how "reliable" a harddisk brand is, we need to know that it has moving parts, and there is this random factor that will cause hdd to fail.

Reliability is only one thing. I really cannot stand the noise created by my 200 gig harddisk (I think is WD). Any idea what I should do?

    hi,
There is no such thing call best Hdisk. In today's technology, all Hdisk are almost made equal. It all depends on your need and budget. Next, all disks, no matter how good, will fail one day, it depends on your luck. So it is important to have good backup copy.
While RAID might be more reliable, it is not foolproof. If the RAID controller fails and screw the RAID config up, one may lose the data in the RAID completely.

In summary, get a disk with warranty so that one can have it replaced in case it fails. Do backup regularly, either to another disk, or to a backup media like tape or DVD. Very often, people take it for granted that their disk will not fail, one day when the disk suddenly fail to spin up, one will realise that almost all the years of efforts and intelligence are gone over night, which can be very painful, but too late.

the best hard disk is the one that dun crash, fast speed, low noise, cheap, durable from fall and magnetic wave, lightweight, low heat and can last for more than 100 years

Nowadays not many brands to choose from.
I use Seagate and Maxtor myself.
Anyway, the main enemies of hard disks are heat and shock. If you want to prolong the life of your hard disk, have a small 12V fan blowing directly over the hard disk to keep it cool. That will go a long way to prolong it's life.

Get harddisk with the longest warranty.

doesn't matter which brand. They all buy the spare part from the same factory in china

So best practice is still... backup your data regularly.

I find Seagate pretty decent. Personally, I'll avoid Maxtor at all costs.
