Sorrento is a small coastal town to the east of Naples. It is accessible by Circumvesuviana (an MRT-like train) or express boat from Naples. A lovely place for a pleasant walk and the buildings by the cliffs offer spectacular views.

Ya. All the places I've been to are accessible with public transport. You can buy either a 24-hr or 72-hr tickets for intra-city travel with all kinds of transport, i.e., subways, trams and buses. For inter-city travel, e.g., Rome to Florence, I took the Trenitalia trains which are quite economical and comfortable.

A friend of mine went to Rome last year and sworn that he would never visited Italy again after seeing how the gang of pickpockets targeting 2 old American tourists in the bus. Did you encounter such bad experience? Any place to avoid?

Everyone will have different encounters and experiences in different places. If say I saw a robbery taking place in France, I will say France is not safe. One can never generalize.
For those backpacking through Italy, I would recommend this guidebook: Let's Go Italy 2006. Much better than Lonely Planet. Brings you to the more obscure places in Italy (i.e. small restaurants, places to watch the sunset, etc etc.). All the answers to your questions with regards to accomodation, transport, etc etc can be answered in this book. That way TS won't be bombarded by questions that can be easily found in a book or online. Oh, and this book is catered more for those who are intending to travel on a budget (i.e. backpacking). Beautiful pictures by the way! |

No problem at all. Just thought I could throw in my 2 cents worth. Was there about 5 months ago, backpacking through Italy by myself for about 3 weeks. Only wish I had taken up photography before I went on the trip! Have some terrible shots from my PnS, haha.

but my beg has such volume to carry my camera, lenses, drinking water, umbrella and jacket, which is about 8-10 kg. Go to Hotel Reservation website and you should find the accommodation that suits your expectation and budget. It's better to book before you arrive because getting accommodation can be difficult during the peak season in July-August. |
