Back home, started to play with it. Connect charger and power up. Connect mouse into usb port - recognised device, but could not work at all, when it could have been plug and play. Tried thumb-drive - same thing no-go.

Next thing - NO Recovery Disk - you got to make a set yourself - such a terrible cost cutting measure! I tried to burn the DVD, but didn't seem to work.

Then, the web connection - detected 3 signals from my neighbours. I plugged in mine from the "fat green pipe". OK, this one worked at least.

Another thing - don't seem to be able to adjust the screen brightness at all with the function keys. And by the way, there ain't any instruction manual at all, not even a soft copy in CD.

Well, overall, I think this ain't a good bargain after all. I would think twice next time for any freebies.....

And anyone else got the same problem? I guess the HP helpline would be flooded with calls.
    Bro,

You not the only one facing this problem in fact alot of ppl in Hardwarezone Singapore are also complaining about Starhub's free HP "Centrino" laptop!
Tell you something that make you more HOT, the HP lappy you got from them is not even Centrino technology!!!

Centrino use Intel Pro wireless but maybe to cut cost HP choose to use Broadcom wireless which is not as good as the Intel Pro!!!

What do you think about this???

Well, not quite a graveyard, but it from a warehouse - you know those humongous dark and eerie building where one gang comes with a bag full of US$ and the other comes with a bag of heroine and they transact and ends up with lots of fireworks like in the movies. And naturally the location in one of the most ulu corner of the island.

Those chaps who handles your collection are temps hired by the logistics company Richland Logistics. So, good-luck to you...

nah, internet is a right that every singaporean should have, we shouldnt even pay a cent for it. This is wat the govt owe us for the tax we pay.

hi, the notebook is actually not free.

it has been calculated into your internet price plan..

in fact, if u buy notebook from outside, it may be cheaper.

    Correct bro!
Starhub stated that their freebies is HP Centrino Laptop but best thing is they use a cheaper Broadcom wireless (Centrino use Intel Pro).
Many people kena smoked until they dunno. They think they are holding on to a Centrino but real fact that it is NOT! You say power or not?

I collected my notebook from the warehouse on monday.

so far the booknote is working fine, but the recovery programme by HP is really PITA, wanted to burn 3 DVD recovery discs version, tried many times but all failed, has anyone have a better luck on this? or any other better recovery programme to recommand?

i tried the dvd making too. for some reasons, the first few times, the burning kept failing at the disk verification part. in the end, i went to buy some high quality dvd (those by sony) and tried again, and wa la! it worked! guess the cheaper dvds i had gave some read problems during the verification process.

a rough guess i make is that the program fails at the slightest read problem it detects.

Yeah, it is natural that DVDs are much more sensitive and delicate than CD, as the former packs 7x the data into the same space. Any misalignment of the laser would cause malfunction.

My NB is now in the HP Hospital, waiting for discharge and hopefully, it works well and need for more visit to the HPH. I will get a few pieces of more expensive DVD to do the Recovery Discs.

actually, the sensitivity of dvd is really irritating too. when i was burning the recovery disks with the high quality dvds i just bought, one of them failed just because i accientally shook the lappie. i really wonder how it will be like for blu-ray .

When I got my laptop from Singnet on 05, I also don't bother to learn how to do backup etc.. Just go to SLS n get a piece of 512MB RAM as 256MB, no way!
