Forget both, get a Sony A100. Good deals in the Marketplace section too!

Another one with no roadmap and plans for the future, how to be assured that what you buy is going to last?

Well, my main investment is in the A-mount lenses. And that'll still be around for a long time.

But between the D40 and the Canon 400D....

Well, honestly, the D40 "feels" better in my hand, but the limitation on the lenses will cost a fortune in the long run. I'd have to say 400D. Or, you can still get a 350D b-new kit at MS color for 900-ish. Why 350D? Bigger hand-grip. More comfortable (for me) than a 400D.

Sony should continue to make their Walkman....can't really see how they can excel in this arena. It will be a long way before Sony reach the level of Nikon or Canon.

I agree, but considering that the A100 is basically an updated Minolta cam, and Sony retained the minolta team, Sony has "jumped" to the level minolta was at. Add to that sony's marketing machine, and I don't think it will take long for the Alpha line to really challenge Nikon and Canon. Sony just needs to release more Alpha bodies targetted at the various DSLR market groups and it'll be much more of a contender.

Also, don't forget Sony's own huge experience with TV cameras and their successful consumer cameras. Acquiring Minolta's camera division was exactly what they needed to cover all market segments.

What has Nikon been doing? Coming out non-endlessly with smaller useless bodies. The glass range variety is so limited although it covers the range.

Think about it and you'll realise that missing certain ranges like FEs on the 400D, you have more options as a newbie to use the 70-200 f/4, if you can afford slightly better, 70-200 f/2.8 non-IS. If not 70-200 f/2.8 IS.

There's more than just 1 to choose from instead of a limited choice.
    Erm... A newbie can buy
    (1) 70 - 300 G
    (2) 70 - 300 VR

    -OR-
    (1)80 - 200 f/2.8 Non VR
    (2)70 - 200 f/2.8 VR
    (3)55 - 200 f/4

Nikon's ranges are not as limited as you think

    Do note that:

70-300 is not of a constant aperture.

    55-200 is a DX. It's not a f/4 constant glass.

My references to the 70-200 range were all constant f/2.8 and/or f/4 regardless IS or not.

Canon has their own 70-30 range, and the 70-200 range as well.

I was comparing the ranges for the 70-200, what I meant by limiting is the range of design, not range of coverage.

    Nikon AF 80-200 f/2.8
    Nikon AF-S 70-200 f2.8VR

    Canon AF 70-200 f/4
    Canon AF 70-200 f/2.8
    Canon AF 70-200 f/2.8 IS.

But when I tried both at the same time on the same spot, the D40 definitely feels more solid, less "plasticky". Issit the materials used?

I think its the design of the grip(d40 have more space in between the grip and the lens making it more comfy), the material used(iirc nikon use a slightly higher grade plastic as compared to 350d), and maybe also the use of soft rubber.
