I usually wear SAF boots when I go overseas.

Light (compared to the older leather ones), water & snow proof and tough.

Dun be surprised, there are some who use them exactly for this purpose. And for outdoor photography too.

    evenstar,

get the timberland yellow classic boots.guaranteed waterproof.i had the first pair for 8 years.walked all over europe and even to snow cap mountains, then the sole worn out and now i'm currently on my 2nd pair.
you maybe drenched through your skin but your feet will remain DRY.

nothing comes close but i think the closest will be SAF boots?i dunno.i dont have a pair.

As mentioned, Goretex is just a membrane. Its not external nor the part touching your feet/socks. Many shoe brands uses this membrane, so you can choose from your favourite shoe brand for your favourite design. When choosing them, just look out for the seams and the sole. I feel this are the points that differentiate the good to the excellent...

I also like timberland boots. My last pair lasted me 5 years, worn EVERYDAY. Yes weekdays + weekends. In the end the inner soles got worn out....

I have a pair of gortex timberlands but it seems to be REALLY slippery. Definately NOT recommended for travelling. I usually wear my classic Timberland boots when I go overseas. It really helps not just in keeping the water out but also keeping the warmth in.

I really don't see the point in getting the gortex version. My feet don't feel "fresher" wearing the gortex one.

Recently Timberland had this great sale where they slashed the prices and gave a further 15% off. I got a pair of timberland boots for $95 which is quite amazing

timberland soles are replacable.so if your upper lining all doing well, can always bring back to them.
i dumped mine cos i didnt put heart to 'protect' and maintain the leather with their conditioning cream.

$300 too expensive lah, that is the non-sale list price right. I think the recent timberland sale that pair also got discount.

I got my darker brown one for very cheap at an outlet store in the States. I got that yellow pair for my wife too and it was around USD 70 or below. I think I carried 4 pairs of timberland back from that Trip.

ya lah. most people who buy timberland shoes are not hikers. I just buy them because they LAST comfortable and looks good. not for outdoor hiking.
