Thread: Is this pic overexposed .... hmm ...due to wrong monitor brightness ?

Default Is this pic overexposed .... hmm ...due to wrong monitor brightness ?

    http://www.photoshelter.com/img-show/I0000cQ7nt4EqBXI
On my monitor I can see:
    - Crumples on the man's long shirt
    - Details on his golden turban
On my friend's montior, he says the picture is too over exposed ..cannot see any details.

Is there a industry std for getting the correct brightness ?
How does one ensure when editing in PS or any other programs that the monitor displays the correct brightness ? To complicate things ....latops and CRT display differently.

No. I don't think it is overexposed. It looks fine on my monitor.

Now, here is a general guideline. If you are using a LCD monitor, adjust its luminance to not more than 120 cd/m2. If you are using a CRT, your monitor's lumiance should not be more than 100 cd/m2.

Use a monitor calibrator puck to check its luminance.

Another way to find out if your image is overexposed is by looking at its histogram.

looks ok but i would prefer a slightly darker exposure. The whites on the mans chest looks too bright but still acceptable.

Seems alright to me. The highlights are not overly blown.

Seems ok to me too, highlights are not totally blown, but some areas are slightly over exposed.

Looks ok to me too. Highlight details are still visible and skin tone exposure seems ok. But like DeSwitch, I would also prefer it to be slightly darker, maybe 1/3-1/2 stop down.

I think your friend's monitor needs calibration.

This is from dpreview. They have this greyscale bar in all their in depth reviews.

Are you able to resolve the tonal differences between A,B,C and D and W,X,Y, and Z?
