Default Need your suggestions on which digital compact camera to buy

    Hi guys,

I have decided to buy a digital compact camera but with so many in the market, I need your suggestions given my photographic needs.

    1) It must have between 7 to 10 megapixels.
    2) At least 5x optical zoom preferably 10x.
    3) An option for Shutter or Manual modes.
    4) ISO 1600 at least.

I guess these are what I want in a camera. Design wise, I rather like the Nikon Coolpix range - the ones with handle grip. But that is secondary.

    Thanks!

guess you can either drop the 7-10megapixel requirement or the iso1600... by getting both, you spelling "NOISE"

if you want COMPACT, i suggest u forget about 1+2 together.

1-dont bother abt megapixels. 4mp is more than enough for most uses

    2) 10x zooms are not available in compact cams. you need a prosumer for 10x zooms are they are quite large

    4) High ISO 1600 + 7mp = noise = trashy picture quality.

my advice: fuji f30 or F31. if not, substitute high ISo with image stabiliser and get the canon ixus 850 IS

actually 2 is possible... there a Nikon S10 and Lumix TZ1, both offering 10x zoom, tho size ain't as compact as f30, but i consider them compact

A friend suggested that I wait for Powershot A710 IS. The size is also quite alright. Is it out yet?

Today I went window shopping...The salesperson at mega store told me that Canon (not DSLR) still has the best picture quality as compared to the other brands....And another salesperson at another store told me that current digital cameras now more or less have good picture quality and the differential is not at all great?

    Is that true?

Judging by what you have written that you wanted manual mode, P&S should not be for you. You are most likely looking at Prosumer camera.

Have you ever think of exploring further to look at DSLR? For the price of a prosumer, you are better of with a DSLR (e.g. Nikon D40). All you need is the 18-135 lens and a SB400 and you are good to go.

    Cheers

ive used canon for a long time, from film SLRs to their digital compacts and now to 400D. i recently bought a fuji F30 and to me the F30 is superior still to their latest Ixus 850 IS.

i dont think there is such a thing as best picture quality. most cameras today are competent enough to give good shots for the average user

I dont really want prosumer cameras...they tend to be huge and bulky to put in my handbag. I agreed the price for Canon S710 IS is about the price for some prosumer cameras but...size and weight do matter in this case!

Cannot agree more that Fuji F30 or F31 will suit your need most. Small and easy to use. 6MP is more than sufficient for general use unless you frequently print larger than A4 size paper. You may get a good price from MS Colour at AMK.

prosumer like panasonic fz7 and canon s3 are pretty small in size(definitely bigger than f30/850IS), both have 12x zoom and image stabiliser.

    These are your options :-

    1. Canon s710is ~~ $550 - 6x zoom
    2. Canon a630 / a640 ~~ $500-600 - 4x zoom
    3. Canon ixus 800is ~~ $550 - no manual , shuttle, aperture mode, 3x zoom
    4. Canon ixus 850is ~~ $629 - no manual , shuttle, aperture mode, 3x zoom
    5. Lumix TZ1 ~~ $500 - no manual, shuttle, aperture mode, 10x zoom
    6. Lumix FX50 ~~ $630 - no manual , shuttle, aperture mode, 3.6x zoom
    7. Lumix LZ5 ~~ $500 - no manual , shuttle, aperture mode, 6x zoom
    7. Finepix F31fd ~~ $600 - 3x zoom
    8. Nikon s10 - 10x zoom
    9. Nikon L5 - no manual , shuttle, aperture mode, 5x zoom

You can forget about iso 1600 or iso 800 for these type of digicams. They are simply noisy at those range. Even the iso 400 and iso 200 are slightly noisy too.
