Default Teleconvertors and 100mm

hi,

i've just made a purchase of 100mm 2.8 macro (canon). does anybody know if it's compatible with a canon 1.4TC? or is it only compatible with third party ones?

You cannot use 100mm macro with Canon TC. It is for telephoto L lens only. Click on this link for detail.

Yes, you can use 3rd party TC like Kenko.

All TCs can degrade photo quality even original brand. Recommended 3rd party brand is Kenko.

Kenko Pro 300 I think. 1.4x should cost you around $200+

Thanks to TS. Now then I know a Canon 1.4x TC can only be used on telephoto L lens.

Cheers!

1.4X or 2X, only you can answer that.. by the way there is a 3X version

Yes you can bring your cam to test.

I think it is better for you to check with the shopkeeper and test it out with your gears personally in the store if you are really keen to buy.

I think TK Foto at Shaw Tower sells this too.

Usually the more expensive is the better one. I think the white one is the better one.

OT a bit. Why would you need to add a TC to yr macro lens? I dont see the need as it will degrades yr optic quality.

TC 1.4X largest aperture will drop by 1.4 times ie if largest f=2.8, it will become 4 with TC 1.4x but if you use 2x TC, largest aperture become f 5.6
SO using TC will actually affect your aperture- have to consider this before buying!!
just my 2 cents
cheers

thanks, i'm buying a TC because it seems everyone that does macro has it... yup i fully understand that a TC not only degrades the optical quality and the aperture. i'm using a Canon 100mm macro 2.8 should i be bothered?

Most people will use TC is for long distance photography like bird. As for macro photography, is it worth to use a TC to degrade the quality or put more effort on how to get closer to the object ?

From what I understand Teleconverters are used to increase the range of your lens (1.4X or 2X). 1.4X is preferred as the degradation in quality is lesser but the range is not as high as the 2X. Both types degrade the image quality. Also, from what I understand TC's are used to bring long distance subjects nearer. Never heard it used for macro photography (maybe I am just naive on this point).

For macro photography, you use either a macro lens, a close-up filter or an extension tube. Note that the extension tube is not the same as a teleconverter.

Digisnap is correct. Teleconverter and extension tube are very different (actually world's apart) I think what is originally covered here should be talking about extension tube (after all this is in the Macro section).

Extension tube will not degrade your image quality (at least not noticable) except that you lose your auto focusing capabilities (at least mine does; not sure about other 1st party eq)

With AF type tubes you do not lose the AF capability. If you want a bigger magnification, den Tube is the answer. What Tube does is that it allows you to go nearer to yr subject hence the magnification will increase. With TCs, you will still have the same magnification but you will have a longer working range. For me, I hate using TC on macro lens even though I have the original canon 1.4x TC. Only use my TC on my Tele lens for birding.
