Default Step up from 49mm to 52 or 55mm?

hi everyone, I am thinking of putting a step up ring for my dimage A1. Currently it is mount with a 49mm UV. But I notice that a lot of filters from Hoya cater from 52mm onwards...

So I am thinking, will this combination works
    Lens 49mm + step up 52mm + 52mm UV filter + 52mm Flower Hood.

I did some basic research from here and the web and know that with step up/down it may cause vignette or flare. So which size should I step up? the 52mm or 55mm.

    thanks

since you are stepping up, 52 should do as long as you don stack 2 or more filters.

hmmm... I think I made a mistake with the combination. It should be

    Lens 49mm + step up 52mm + 52mm UV filter + future 52mm add on

Anyway read from a forum that it is better to step down than step up???

no, it is better to step up... like 52>55.

From my experienced... i once stepped down from 58mm to 52mm. Vignetting is very obvious! If you want to step up or down of filter size, the focal lenght of the lens does play a part too!

If you use the step-up ring, then you will find that you can no longer attach/remove the flower hood without removing the filter.

My suggestion is that you stick to a 49mm UV filter (since you are normally not going to remove it). And if you have other types of filters, then for reason of commonality you can use a step-up ring.

For your info, I have a 7Hi with a normal thickness UV filter fitted. When I use a 49-55mm step up ring and attach a normal thickness Circular Polariser, I experience quite severe vignetting at the wide end.
