Thread: why don't DC makers allow upgrade of electronics instead of whole cam?

  1. #1

Question why don't DC makers allow upgrade of electronics instead of whole cam?

Some cameras have excellent optics but the sensors and DSP are lousy.
All they ever need is to change the circuit board.

Why should they? It gives them less profits and more work. How do they warranty such modification? From a manufacturing point of view, rework is always more expensive than new. In some industries, if a product fails they simply scrape them rather than rework.

What matters is Profits to the company. Unless some 3rd party company is game enough to go into this field. Dunno what is the legal complication though.

    Just my point of view.

actually, 2 companies has somthing along this line.

Leica - the digital back is a snapon for the R series SLR. You remove the reg back and attach the digital back. If there are any future upgrades to the digital back, theoratically, you only buy the new back, the rest of the camera body stays the same.

Inmacon - their MF digital back, when they upgrade the sensor, you can send the back for upgrade at a discounted price.

you aren't in the manufacturing line are you?

liek what deswitch mentioned. Rework is more expensive than production. You can automate production of new items, but you cannot automate rework. The concept might sound simple, but it is far from being so.

Eh.. the threadstarter's question is as valid as those people wondering when fullframe will become truly affordable.

Answer to both is: Wishful thinking, the camera manufacturers would rather make as much money as they can from you, unless there's another competitor who's product has that feature and is threatening market share..
