The composition is a bit strange. Either you include more of the trees or none at all. Chopping them off like that doesn't look nice. And the horizon is slanted. But I like the clouds.

my opinion differs though. the alternative you suggested does work, but his composition doesn't fail either, but perhaps less conventional.

becos there is a lack of reference point of gravitation, it will be difficult to comment on the horizon. it may not be slanted at all.

but what i agree is the lack of contrast and dramatic components. and with poor timing and lighting condition, i think it would be difficult to achieve satisfactory post processing results.

Looks familiar....Is this shot taken from the tourist information central? It's pretty hard to avoid the trees if taken from low ground

The pic looks ok to me except for the contrast which can be easily improved as has been done above. Quite a typical shot that most of us would get as tourists.

Mt Fuji can be seen from many differnt angles. It's not easy to shoot it if you are there on a tour or even if u travel on your own on a limited time. The thumbs-up beautiful ones I've seen done by some Jap photographers took a lot of patience and effort, especially in finding a good spot and magical lighting.
