Question G5 setup for plasma output ?

Hello,

I'm a Mac newbie. got a couple of questions.

My G5 has ADC and DVI out , where the DVI is hooked up to a cinema display.
The G5 is hooked up to a Panasonic DVC pro 50 deck, that has BNC out only.
I have a Plasma tv that takes in DVI , component , Scart , s-video .

My questions are :

1 ) what's the best way to hook up all the 3 ?

Do I ? - Get an ADC to DVI converter and use the plasma as a mirror display ? Or can this configuration be used as an extended desktop for the main cinema display ?

2 ) If I want both outputs, from the G5 direct, as well as the deck to play tapes to clients, what's the best way ?

3) when I hook up the bnc to my plasma with a bnc to rca converter, I find that the Final cut pro timeline playing off through firewire to the deck and onto the plasma screen, shows a video lag delay of a few seconds. Is there a way to get rid of this ?

Thank you for the response(s) .

Much appreciated.

The G5 should support dual display so depending on how you configure you system, you can either mirror the display or extend your desktop.

Connect both the DVI as well as the output of the VTR to this monitor and switch input source using the remote. However, you might as well just use the output of the tape to the monitor. When you monitor via DVI from FCP, you're not seeing the true video output, only the interpolated representation from FCP.

Don't think this is possible. Firewire will lag. If you need to get rid of this, the best way will be to use a dedicated video I/O card. There is an option to adjust the delay between video playback in FCP's canvas vs the video output. Can't remember what it's called but that will be the first place you should look.

Bro, Just get the Decklink HD Extreme. Can use the component out from the card to your plasma display. The SDI I/O connections will go to your DVCPro Deck.

Using this card will eliminate any latency as there's no firewire involved. Video through Firewire inherently has a A/D and D/A feature that causes the latency. Cannot be helped.

Expect to pay about S$1600 to S$1800. I've installed two to my customers already.

One thing to bear in mind, video may not fill the whole screen as output is mapped 1 pixel to 1 pixel. For example, if you are outputting SD, your HD plasma display will only show the video scaled down.

Check www.decklink.com for more info.

To bad this also means that I don't get WYSIWYG o/p off from the deck, if we're mastered final cut back into tapes for archiving what.

This only means we get to see what's on the timeline. So instant DV corrupted data will not show on the timeline, should that only affect the printout to the tape, which we cannot tap from the deck, without lag.

To workaround this, all you need is a component video toggle, then you can switch between monitoring off the deck and off the timeline.
