Simple solution. But before we goto the solution, we need to understand ourselves.

As johnlim said, "... the diversity of the whole community ..." and Michael, "... accept and understand a different opinion instead of killing it ..."

We have a large group of members, with varied backgrounds and experiences.
Everyone has different point of views. Everyone has something different to offer.

To improve CS (I am deliberately staying away from using the word "intellectual" as it is but only one ingredient that makes CS ticks) as a community, we have to embrace everyone, even though that we do not like, and we have to accept opposing opinions, even though we do not agree.

How to do that? Should not be too difficult, and it's simple.

We must guard against labelling and stereotyping others to be intellectually inferior. Such attitudes are counter productive.

We must have an open mind. WE must listern to what others have to say, even if their English is not too polished, the words not too eloquent, and their reasoning not too rational or logical. What they say, is part of the diversity that as a sum, will contribute to improve CS.

Nearly forgot one more point. We must encourage all the members to speak up, speak their minds, offer their opinions. It's ok even if the words are crude and clumpsy, it's your thoughts that counts.

My take on this is, that eloquence, whether is it in speech or writing, is not equitible to intelligence. Likewise intelligence is not wisdom.

I've got to agree with DP on this, that a forum is demographically diversified, and hence we've got to agree to disagree on many issues that may arise from a discussion/argument.

In fact, hearing different POVs from all quarters can actually help us in seeing many things in a different light, and help us understand better and improve. This is something which we can't achieve if we are too full of ourselves and being opinionated.

It is sad in a photography forum, many choose to see things in only black or white. The "either you are with us, or against us" mentality is still quite prevalent.

Must there always be a winner or loser in argument and discussion. Sure, we argue to make others see our POV. At the same time, we must also go and digest and try to understand where the other party is coming from, and perhaps we can learn and empathise with the other party's POV as well.

Trying to win an argument, IMO, is no crime. But to win one at all cost, is truly a fallacy.
