Angry Probably the worst BBQ seafood in my life.....

Just want to share the disgusting experience I had tonight.

Was shooting an X'mas event in Yio Chu Kang Community Club and brought my family for dinner at a nearby coffeeshop after which. Ordered a BBQ stingray and sambal "Tua Tao" for dinner and I specifically pointed that I want the one I had selected. The lady says OK, but I noticed she had not move the selected for the kitchen. I purposely pass by a few more times to "show" her that I am watching, and she just ignored me.

About 20 mins later, she served a plate of BBQ stingray which was obviously smaller than the one I had chosen, I challenged her and she try to give me stories like its normal the fish will shrink after BBQ. I walked to the "ice tray" and pointed to her the piece I had selected is still there, she began giving me another crap that those are sample pieces, its normal that the kitchen will just serve the correct size as per order. I probe further, and she reluctantly brought the plate away for replacement.

Meanwhile, the sambal "Tua Tao" was served. I began to dig around for the tua tao flesh and find it extremely suspicious when none of the flesh is "stick" to the shell. I tasted one and could tell immediately that it is not the fresh type (probably frozen). We began to have interest in the dish and start looking for more evidence to support our claims. Without eating, we split the flesh and shell onto each side of the plate, and there are about 30 over shell and 10 over pieces of flesh. All except 1 pathetic piece have the "stock" (the part and hold the flesh to the shell) which is evidential that they had probably reuse the shells after thorough cleaning, remove the "stock" since it will decay.

Since I had my camera with me, I shot some pictures and obviously they are shocked to witness me doing that. I consulted again to the lady who served me the "renew" piece of stingray (probably) and she quickly explain that she will highlight it to the chef (a lot more polite than previously was) and she came back telling me they will not charge me for the "tua tao" since it wasn't up to standard.

Attach are some pictures of the shellfish dish served.

The only shell with the "stock"

    No stock here....

    Not here too...

    Nor here....

PS: C & C not necessary as I only shot these pictures using the 18-70mm kit lense... keke...

Hahah...had a similar experience while eating at a hotel overseas. Th hotel serves seafood buffet . And was served a scallop dish. Obviously the scallop was the frozen type and they stick the scallop on to the "reused" shell with mozzarella cheese....heehheh....cheats....

You do know that they already spat in your "new" piece of stingray and "tua tao" right?
I wouldn't eat the dishes if i were you. i would have just taken a few pictures of the stall in front of them, tell them to wait for bad news and leave. Give them a few sleepness nights to worry.

Quite shocking. If they are recycling the shells, I really wonder how hygenic their kitchens are.

Perhaps you should have posed as a food journalist, snapped more pics and send/sell the story to New paper or something.

IMO, there's no need to give chance to such an unscrupulous resturant.

As passionate food-crazy s'poreans, we must do more to uphold our reputation as a food paradise.

Is this the coffeeshop fronting AMK Ave 4 or the one next to the hawker centre?

PS: I am indicating the coffeeshop name here without the intention of organising a boycotting or any actions that would cost them any inconvenience or losses in any business nature.

I seriously hope some "food specialist" might want to confirm my "accusations" or suspicious. I remember they used to served pretty good food, my family used to like their "hor fan", fried rice etc during the day, I thought it is really a waste if the "night team"(if operated by different group)kill the day's business.
The coffeeshop is located in Ang Mo Kio St 61, right between a hawker centre and 7-11, it is diagonally opposite Yio Chu Kang CC. IIRC, it is call Coffee X-press 2000 or something the store doesn't belongs to the coffeeshop as in they are only a tenant.

I think they are already wondering when I was snapping away. Probably not telling them anything would be better torture for them.

Bro, I think TS is not trying to act like food magazine reporter. He's just sharing with us his bad experience with that stall, so as to warn us to be cautious when we patronize that stall. I thought his intention was good. Good things must share, bad things must also share mah...

that is in response to the suggestion by others that he act like a food magazine reporter. i'm saying that he will get into more complications trying to pull off as a food magazine reporter, i didn't say he is doing it now.

We have all heard of recycling/substitution in restaurants tea leaves, beef instead of venison etc. Now we have recycled mussel and scallop shells. The list is getting longer.

Many diners had learnt to time the complaints mostly during bill settlement time so that the cook has no chance of taking it out on the diners. Some of the hearsay on how the cook fights back: spitting on the new dish, stepping on food, use discarded water etc

Also, be patient while waiting and do not repeatedly yell for "faster, faster" service.
