Hey guys, recently i drop my canon 30D on a concrete floor in japan, about a metre high. part of the body has cracked open slightly on the left hand side, near the usb outlet. Other than that the camera is still working fine. As this is the first time such an incident had happen, can someone tell me what i should do?

See if the camera still works. Take some photos and check if everything is still in working order.

If you are really worried then bring the camera to the Canon Service Centre and have them check it out for you. If it's still under warranty then they might be able to repair any faults for free. If not, just be mentally prepared to pay for repairs. No point worrying about it. The forum can only do so much for you.

Do note that drop damage is not covered by warranty, so be prepared for a service fee.

Things will never drop if you migrate to the moon.

One more thing, if the metal chassis has deformed, they probably won't repair it (or at least you probably won't repair it as the cost of repair will be stupid expensive). Bringing it down to canon is to give it a once over to make sure that there is no further damage and it's just cosmetic.

Not true... There is still some gravity on the moon...

I think that would be near impossible unless you drop it while trying to mount it on the tripod... But I doubt you would attach your body at that time.

Seriously depends on the damage... Send it in to Canon for a quote before you decide...

Well, these things happen. Next time, you can buy insurance. It's worth it if you tend to be clumsy.

Personally, I don't bring the gear I cannot afford to drop or lose on a trip. Actually, I have never bought gear I cannot afford to drop or lose on a trip.

Not necessary. If u accidentally bumped hard on it, it may happen. Even though it's just the lens without the body, the cost is enough to kill u liao.

I have heard horror stories of ppl dropping their 500mm, 600mm f4 + pro body into the sea or river while on a boat. Moral of the story: don't bring your big lens out on a boat.

Wah!! Make sure the boat is a huge one then more stable and don't put it too close to the edge.
