Default Checking canon lense

Hi,

Is it common to hear sounds of parts rubbing against each other when you turn the zoom ring on a zoom lense?

Yes, it's normal. Regardless of how much lubrication is placed on the parts of a lens some sound will still be heard. After all, it is the result of friction between the parts which in effect slows things down and causes it to stop. Otherwise, your focus ring would spin endlessly after a single turn.

Anyway, bad joke aside. It depends on what sort of noise you're hearing. It should not sound abrasive, as if there is sand stuck in there. Neither should there be excessive creaking or a whining sound. I think a mild 'hissing' sound is acceptable.

Nonsense. There will surely be some sounds of friction as parts move. How bad or how loud it is will be a totally different issue and dependent on the lens in question...

As they have said above, theres always friction. Just ensure that the turning is smooth and consistant.

Thnks Guys,

There seems to be some kind of rubber rubbing against something. Anyway I bought this lense from one of the guys in the forum. Still waiting for him to get back to me as he is overseas. I need a copy of his purchase receipt so that I can bring the lense down to the service centre to let them have a look.

Thnks for the input guys.
