I still think that companies like Nikon & Canon should make the same cameras in Japan and other Asian countries, and sell the Made-in-Japan ones at a premium price, so to satisfy those who prefers the quaility or the price factor.

Having an electronic product that last you a long long time may not be much of an advantage too as we tend to upgrade within a few years? So not many people would want to buy made in Japan products... Especially if the price is pushed even higher because of lack of demand... |

The man power there is capable and relatively cheap compare to other countries. And I believe Thai government also encourage them to build factory in Thailand by easier Tax scheme. Regards, Arto. |

That kind is likely to be OEMed, that is the same OEM sell the product to different companies, who will "brand" it as their own, quite a common practice, not just with cameras but with other products as well.

Actually in today's global economy, its really hard to tell what is considered "Made-in-Japan". The semiconductor maybe assembled in Taiwan and tested in Singapore, the circuit board maybe from China, the circuit board assembled in Malaysia, the memory card socket from USA, the body plastic and metal parts from Indonesia, the camera itself assembled in Thailand, but the test equipment is from Japan, but then the person who write the test program maybe from India, etc, etc.

There are many other products much more expensive than a D80 and still got defect, eg. cars. |
