Default 300mm f/2.8 Prime.

i'm just wondering, how many versions of this lens there is and how different is it from another? also, what's the common street price for a used one?

oh, and NOT THE VR copy, just the 300 f/2.8 (if i'm not mistaken, they discontinued this lens)

There even a 300mmf2

Any 3rd party would produce as good result.

Check this

YMMV

the difference between 2.8 and 4 may help you make the picture instead of breaking (especially if you shoot indoor sports - i.e. usually no flash allowed)

But... heh. You know who you are if you need (or want) to shell out 7k for this baby

AFI300/2.8 between AFD and AFS DI , reference - http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/specs.html#300
Warning - 300/2.8 AF (screw driven version) is known to be slow in AF (too much glass to move to focus).

Internal focus motor (which is not silent wave) and fully compatible with AFS accessories (eg TCxxEII).
