Are tri/monopod heads universal?

Ok, this is a silly question. But I am looking to replace my stock 3-way head on my slik330 because of load limitations (that 300 2.8 is one heavy piece of glass), and I was wondering if manfrotto/gitzo ballheads would fit just the same, or with any other tri/monopod brand for that matter

(logic dictates that it should be the same... but I'm not so sure. heh. So I'm seeking some confirmation)
