eh... no rule says dat nikon filter only for nikon lenses...

if u are shooting both film and digital at the same time using the same lens, then better get the B+W. NC filter doesn't cut UV... and i've learnt it the hard way dat the UV light does play havoc to my film. ever try spending the entire day PSing away a horrible yellow cast on film? not something i like to repeat again...

Thanks! I found that prices of Nikon filter and B+W are similar.
apart from cutting the UV light, how about the hardness of coating, and the easiness of cleaning? I know the hoya ones are quite frigile and hard to clean.

Both NC and B+W are about the same. But the build of B+W is better

i would prefer B&W cos its easier to clean. i gaveup my Nikon NC as it was very hard to clean. Actually no filter is best as any piece of glass will detoriate the picture quality.

This is my personal experience and opinion.

beside glass quality, the hoya filters are held in place by clips which can trap yr cleaning cloth's fibre and also allows dust to enter. B&W filters are held in place with screw-in rings. Oh the housing is also made of brass which will not lock when you want to remove them.

I only need to blow my filter most of the time. NC, i always need to use the cleaning liquid.

kodak gold and porta. shooting my boy lor... wasted 3 rolls b4 i discover the problem. even my regular photo shop owner was asking me wat happened...

i not too sure whether this is so. but i was talking with some people from the camera shop dat i normally go to. it seems B+W has 2 different manufacturers, at least according to them. they lent me some old filters made in germany (circa 1990s batch) vs the current batch. it seems dat the make and built of the old batch is better.

one thing for sure, hoya is okie for budget buyers or those who want to some form of protection on their low-cost lenses. but, apart from all the faults pointed out earlier, i also noticed that hoya filters give a slight pinkish cast. u can see this when u place a hoya filter on a piece of clean white paper.

The B+W MRC coating is . Try to clean it with microfiber cloth, and you can feel the smoothness of the coating.

Last time my filter all hoya, and I always not happy since I can't clean up fingerprint on it without any solution (and still not happy with the result). Until its scratched. Once I tried B+W, I can clean up fingerprint and now I don't ever think about solution again. Now my filters all B+W.

Regards,
Arto.

Why you use 3rd party filters?
