Default Asia 5-Men Paintball Worldcup 2006, Malaysia

Thanks to the help of Marc and his friends, i managed to get a media pass to shoot for this paintball competition. i'd say it's the most difficult event i've done so far and it is far less than clean, more or less a mud shower, when you need to walk around the event site. i'm not complaining, it was an eye opener for me.

when i first started shooting, i was a too chicken to go into the field (reason: my gears (70%) and myself (20%) and useless (10%)). shot a round on a scalfolding gantry and the shots were...erm...fugly. so i had bring my gears into the field and shoot at the sidelines. marshall was stringent about me running along with the players because i'll not not be discreet enough and it's easier for the opponent to detect the player's whereabout. so, sideline it is.

1. Brute looking stickers are required on the marker (gun) so tell others you mean serious business.

2. Everyone that needs to go into the field is required to wear the safety gear. including myself, so please bear with the composition, i couldn't really see everything in the view finder. nonetheless if i suck, i suck.

3. Players walking into the starting point of the game. This is a part where you can look as stylo as you like, because nobody's shooting at you.

4. Players on a standby position of waiting for the marshall to call the game to start.

5.After the start is called, players are to run as fast as possible for cover, behind the the big blue/yellow balloons, while shooting and dodging opponent's rounds.

6. An example of players reinfocring the attack into the enemy quarters by slowly advancing into other covers to secure a better position to aim and control the enemy lines.

7. Due to heavy usage in the rounds, reloading pallets in the field is a must.

8. Players being checked by marshalls on whether they've been shot by the opponent.

9. If you're shot, you walk back to the starting point, hide behind and wait until the game is over.

10. If you've not been shot, you can keep on going on shooting spree, erm, i mean continue in the game.

note:
1) most shots were taken barefeet. my slippers died on me halfway while walking into the entrance. so i have to leave it behind. (i know, who cares, but i thought i might just wanna share)
2) if at any point that i have provided misguiding information, please correct me.
3) c&c welcomed.

#1 & #8 Nazi Party sticker on the lady's gun is very sensitive. Let us not forget millions died. It remains illegal in Germany.

last picture to me is stunning, however his left leg seem to be very close to the end of the picture, giving it more space would turn out nicer i guess.

i has very limited space at the sideline. when i shoot while wearing the mask, everything is sort of cropped, so i didn't really get my composition right and just shoot.

I am disappointed in seeing this "sticker" and yet glorified in your caption. It does not mean business. I meant insensitivity and ignorance.

I like some of the action shots that you have taken, but a wider shot in some of them might have been more effective in showing the action in the "battleground".

The lady is representing her country (flag of her country displayed on her jersey). Does her Country support the Nazi Party? The Nazi swastika insignia is banned/illegal in some countries. Is it legal to showcase these pictures in here?

yes i can see that they are pictures which had displayed the nazi party sticker but,
i don't see why would it be illegal to show the photos here.

would it be any different if you were to shoot a great portraiture of a real nazi skin head, which documents the reality that there are still people living in a nazi world of their own? even if someone posts a set of photos with nazi themes or nazi skin heads, why would it be illegal? since when is visual documentation illegal?
hmmm if it's illegal to showcase those photos, then, shouldnt the film American History X be banned?

sorry to have sidetracked in this thread, but i dont see that it is illegal to showcase those photos here; they're just photos.

thanks for the comments.

apologise to those who is offended by my comment on the swastika sticker on the player's marker. i'm very sorry.

however, i'm not sorry for publishing the photos of player which has the swastika sticker on her photo. i'm photographing the event and i'm a neutral party that reports whatever i see when i shoot. so, if the girl happen to be one of the best players of the best team that won the event, i believe that she deserves a slot of photograph on the event. i'm merely dictating what i saw, and viewers are entitled for their own opinion.

if the moderators believes that the thread is SENSITIVE, they can close and delete this thread at any point of time.

Mr Fok, I curious, if you're talking about Swastika as an agent of racial discrimination, then i do not blame you. but, BUT if you're thinking that swastika is a symbol of violence and genocide during the WWII, i think you might want to go back and burn some Japan flag as well, since you're at it, burn some sony products and mitsuibitsi cars.

yet again, I'm very sorry about the remarks i made about the Swastika.

Plus, don't forget that the swastika is also the symbol for religions too..

And er, part of the Chinese name of Maha Bodhi school, hahahaha.

But anyways, since this IS a photo thread, not a Swastika thread.. I like #2 a lot! Can't explain why though, I think it's the mood. =)

Mr Liew, u need not guess what I think. U glorify a sportswoman who was using this insignia. Since u're so smart enlighten us why countries like Germany, Austria, Hungary, Poland, Cezh Republic, Brazil, France etc have banned the use of the Nazi insignia? Go ask them why they banned it and tell them burn some Japanese products too. Mr Boddah, U wanna enlighten us too? Both of u can join hands.

As for religious use, Mr night86mare, compare both of them more carefully. They are different. Make sure u to don't pray to the wrong one.

i do not know if you knowingly captioned the swastika a glorified term as a cool, brute-looking, serious business, and if you say you dun intend to, nobody's doubting it. and i believe capturing an event apparently holds no wrong. some countries banned it in a way that it cannot be propagated as a symbolic item, like a print on a t-shirt or part of a graphic design on an advertisement. but surely it can go onto a textbook and nobody's going to sue you for that. a journalistic series or reportage can be in a way similar to a textbook, and the pictures can't go wrong - it is the interpretation and projection that spells issues. whether they are really legal or illegal in this forum is beyond my actual understanding on the legislation, but by common sense, it can become illegal if it is meant or projected or can be misunderstood as a propagation. so i guess, it is all about the context.

the lady's flag seems to be from the Philippines, so i wasn't sure if it does carry any discriminatory note or is simply a rebellious (and ignorant) expression. and the real worries is not actually nazism or neonazism in europe, but a delusional anti-semitic discrimination, which has important political association in our region. i shall not go beyond that, interested parties can read up further. as a third party, i felt that you have replied rudely instead of sounding apologetic. there is no need to compare with burning of japanese flags, cars and elecronics, which itself is actually an expression of new soaring nationalism flaming on old debts. and the capitalization is also inappropriate.

but picture wise, i think you did a great job. the coverage is there, and the pictures are story telling. #9 could have a bit more space like what is done in #5. i'm just a bit curious why #10 is processed b/w.

p.s. by the way, Mr. Fok, if it is your habit to use a thumb down sign, perhaps you should stop using it abundantly, unless you are sure they will not be in a context of causing ill feelings to someone who read it.

and anyway, cheers, time to move on when everyone got their ideas across.

one is clockwise, another is anti-clockwise. an coincidence and a source of confusion, as well as some ridiculous stories that linked the 2 signs together (you may want to google it)
