Default Tamron 17-35mm VS 17-50mm

I've been using the Tamron 17-35mm F2/8-4 for weddings and has no qualms about it except to find it not long enough at times. I'm wondering if the even more affordable Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 is a good switch? Does the 10mm difference in diameter matter at all? I've done a search and read that some said the 17-50mm at 17mm f2.8 is very soft. Any reviews, comparison or help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!
