hi Canongraphers,
Was looking at Canon's site and found this lens in the list... is this new?? Any users here can give a review and some sample shots? Hope to hear some inputs. Cheers! |

This is not really a very new lens.Just not so popular among photographers here.
It is a very sharp lens for its price, and the USM makes it all worthwhile. I will pick this over the 50mmCompact macro if I'm using 1.6x bodies. Last edited by JediForce4ever; 9th December 2006 at 11:58 PM. |

Hi!
Not sure why I always pop into your thread ![]() I have the 60mm EFS. Recently, I did a very unscientific test of the 35L, 24-70L, 17-40L, 70-200 f4L, 85mm f1.8 and 60mm for my own amusement and edification. I did it to understand why the heck people pay so much for pieces of glass instead of some holiday trip ![]() In summary, for sharpness and detail the 60mm won. I was told by friends this is not surprising since it is a macro. They also said it is probably too sharp for portraits. Colour, 35L won BUT I realised the filter plays an important part and I did not get a chance to test all without filter. Like I said, it's unscientific and I'm sure there are tests and copies of lenses that differ from mine. The 17-55 will probably do very well but I do not have a copy ![]() Sample image... ![]() What else you need to know? I'll try to help... |

hmm...probably a 100% crop of the photo might give us a lil more insight into the lens performance

ok ok, I guess I uploaded the previous pic so I deserve it. here are some 100% crops. I found that some of the focusing points moved a little after I changed lenses so the sharpest point differs from lens to lens. I tested all from f16 to f4 and lower(where applicable) and at various focal lengths for the zooms( I'm too free already I know
) I also lost my 24-70mm tests stuff sorry.Please draw your own conclusions... 17-40L at 34mm, f10 ![]() 70-200f4L at 81mm, f10 ![]() 85mm(f1.8), f10 ![]() 60mm EFS Macro f10 ![]() |

35mmL f10
![]() All used Hoya HMC filters except the 35mm which had a B+W Skylight. I removed the Hoya from the 24-70mm after finding the colours and sharpness poorer than the rest. Voila, I saw the light. Last edited by bigu2fan; 10th December 2006 at 02:24 AM. |

First of all... U2 ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for your inputs.. what can I say... we share the same kind of interest mah.. in addition, thought process also sama sama. hahahaha On a serious note... damn... the EFS 60mm is damn sharp This would translate to a 96mm macro lens on a 1.6x crop factor body man.... first of all we should bear in mind the pitfalls of comparing zooms with primes, and primes with prime macros. Macro lenses in particular are engineered for clinically distortion free all the way to max close-up distance, that's why they cost so much more.
That said, I feel your 70-200L may be either a poor copy or is not focused properly. I have the 80-200L and it certainly almost as sharp as the 100mm macro, no where as poor as your shot indicated. the 70-200L is similar in sharpness to the older 80-200. |
